barrel???

I was told that you nef/h&r barrels don't enterchange. I want a h&r ultra in 223, 270 and 22-250 but they don't list a 22-250 for the ultra. So what can I do to get a ultra 22-250?

If you have a newer frame they will install any barrel that can be fitted to it wheather it be H&R or NEF. If your Serial # starts with a H or an N your good to go.

I had my .223 Ultra rechambered for 22-250, shoots great with light bullets.  52gr or less.

HI tj, how much did it cost you to have your .223 rechambered to 22-250? Is there a reason you just did not spend that $ and get an additional barrel in 22-250 for your reciever? That way you could have had both. I know there must be a reason, right?....<><.... :grin:

andy i don't know what tj40 did or why but in a few year i will get my 223 rechambered to a 22-250 just caz its the cheapest way to get a fast twist 22-250.

Thanks Mitchell, I am sure someone here would have an explanation, even if tj did not respond. Why do you think he wanted a faster twist if he is shooting bullets of 52 grains and lighter accurately out of it? I always thought a faster twist would be preferred to shoot heavier bullets (55+ grain) more accurately? Of course my .223 is shooting 55 grain bullets great and I always thought they would be a little to heavy for the 1:12 twist. I tell you buddy, I enjoy reading the manuals but then again sometimes at the bench things happen that there is no accounting for, I would have thought light bullets in a 22-250 would have preferred a slower twist and heavier ones would have preferred a faster twist. Such is the hobby we have chosen, if it were all easy and it all worked as the numbers say all the time it would not be fun...<><.... :?

I recollect Dennis writing that his .22-250 fluted Ultra(1:14") wouldn't shoot the 60gr Vmax well, but his .223(1:12") would.

your right about a 60 grain .224 bullet in a 1:14 twist quck, it sounds a bit slow on the face of it, but then again some here have reported good results with 64 grainers in a 1:12 .223 barrel, there is more than numbers to this game, they are important and a great place to start, but there is always the unexplained to consider!!!! It sure is fun isn't it :D ....<><.... :grin:

with a 1-9 twist you could shoot the 77 SMK's and i would bet you could shoot the 80's , that would make one fun long range varmint gun.



i havn't got to do much testing with my 22-250(1-14 twist) yet but its looking liek its like's light bullets best, to me the only reason to have a 223 rechambered to 22-250 would be the faster twist .

The funny thing is I always thought a good varmint bullet would be light, fast, and accurate. And if you were going to try some ultra long range varmint work you would go up a bit in caliber to get a larger heavier bullet. Just old fashinoned thinking I guess....<><....  :shock: :grin:  :grin:

BC's are what make and brake varmint guns. go down in cal and up in bullet weight if you want dead varmints

Not to mention the fact that going up in caliber over the 223 rem pretty much eliminates the possibility of seeing the hit, especially in a light rifle like the handi or ultra.

For me half the fun of varmint hunting comes through observing the "desired effect".
