Win. Model 88 Reload?
« on: March 17, 2003, 02:45:55 PM »
I'm considering two model 88's in either 308 or 284 at an auction in a couple weeks. Condition unknow as of yet. Can anyone tell me what I should look for as far as wear and tear (inherent problems) and how succesfull you have been with their being able to handle fairly hot reloads? I had a new Marlin 45/70 1895 that did NOT like hot loads..action seized. I'm thinking the levers cant handle the same as a bolt. Please correct me if I'm wrong! :biggun:

You stand corrected. The Marlin cannot handle high pressures. The Win M88 lives for it.I've had all four of them and still have a 284 and 358 in WinM88.The 284Win from factory is loaded to 56,000psi.Way beyond the limits of the Marlin M1895,336,or even the Win M71,M1886 or M1895.Also the 416-284 McPherson was made by Mic for the Win M88 at 60,000psi.Also at times the 308win is loaded to 63,000psi per Frank Barnes and yes the Win M88 can handle it all. After all it is only a bolt action operated by a lever.
Problems are none, only if you can afford one.284Win in Win M88 run around $1500.00 plus and 358Win in M88 run $2500.00 plus.308Win and 243Win in Win M88 can be had un the $700.00-$1,000.00 range.

Thank you for the info. Im glad to hear that about the win 88's. I have to admit I didnt think they were going to go for that high a price, but i'm definately going to try and nab em if I can! Hopefully the'll come up last and everybody else will have spent their money already.
