Author Topic: 12 gauge H&R Model 162 (?) slug gun? (Read 2114 times)

I hope someone here can help. Today I spoke with a gun store I deal with and the owner told me he had a few Handi's in stock, a 500 S&W, a nice used 7x64 European and one that beats me, a Model 162 (?). He says it's a 12 gauge slug gun with a flip down rear sight. I am pretty sure it's a smoothbore and I was thinking with the flip down rear rifle sight it might make a really handy Handi for slugs out to 50-60 yards and buckshot as well as birdshot. I am unfamiliar with the model and he says he wants $75.00 for it. Anyone know anything about this seemingly handy Handi?...Thanks....<><.... :grin:

The 162 was the 12ga smoothbore. I'd get it if it was in a local store for that price. I've been looking for one for a while but if another gun enters my house before we get our new house built my wife will kill me. I can't complain though. I have made quite a few aquisitions in the last year or so.

Markus, any idea what years the Model 162's were produced? Do you think current production H&R/NEF barrels might be able to be fitted to the reciever? Were the barrel lugs the same? Does the 162 have the screw on or snap-on forearm? Does it have a regular shaped barrel chamber area or was that the model with the "shoulders" by the chamber area? What do you think it might be worth? Thanks, and if you want it buddy you can have it, I'd be happy to let you know where it is....<><.... :grin:

I think it was before the Marlin takeover so the barrel acessory program would be out. Can't really say as I know the answers to your other questions. I have seen them on gunbroker a few times and they usually go for less than $100.00. Thanks for the offer but I have to wait a while before I bring another gun into the house. I think except for the sight it pretty close to the tracker 1.

Andy, I got this info a while back from CS. You will need to get the serial number off the Model 162, but they should be able to help. They gave me the year of the nickel receiver that I have. Here is the info.

That could be a real shooter with the fold down site and a Tracker II barrel installed. I'd buy it. There can't be that many of them around or someone would have seen them.

I have a 162 that I got from my grandfather. It is a smoothbore cylinder choke.

Thanks Kates, have you shot it? If so how does it do with slugs and can you easily flip the rear sight down and reasonably and comfortably shoot birdshot out of it?....<><.... :grin:

I havent shot birdshot through it. I killed two big does last year with Foster slugs, one at 53 yards and the other at 47 yards. I retired it that day, first it kickes like three year old mule, but more importantly I want to take care of it because of sentimental value.

I have one-$100 at a gun show. Has light-colored wood and is light in wt.----too light! Most painful gun I ever shot!. When I fix it up for hogs and deer, it will weigh 8/9 lbs. This gun is pre-safety-screw-on forend, Topper model. Hunman55

I have recently acquired a 162 Buck model 12 ga smoothbore. It is very interesting to me as it came with a dovetailed front sight and a Lyman peep rear sight that is mounted from the side of the barrel.. Seems to be all done at factory but? To my surprise it has the snap-on forend, which I actually think I like. Has AF serial number which dates it to 1969. Also no transfer bar. Looks new or shot very very little. Anyone know what years and/or calibers/gauges are available with the snap on ?

I got a 22Remington Jet with snap on also have 30-30 ,16ga and a 12ga that use snap on forends.The Jet is a 1963 and the others are all pre 1970 I believe.My old 22 Hornet doesn't have the snap on but has the odly placed pillar that was for the original Mannlicher forend. Kurt

I the 162 was the precursor to the Tracker I - built on the H&R 158 platform IIRC. It's a smoothbore slug gun. Rifle sights and a snap on forend. I believe some models had a simple factory peep. For $75, do not pass go, go directly to . . .

This post is like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Unfortunately I was not lucky enough to get that Model 162, but I was lucky enough to get both a 12 guage Tracker 1 and a 20 guage Tracker 1, and they are both very nice slug guns....<><....

They also made the model 162 Buck in 20 gauge. I bought one on the classifieds here years ago. I put it on an SB1 frame with some synthetic stocks and gave it to a friend from church who did a bunch of chimney work for me. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to use it due to major shoulder surgery.

His also has a fold down rear sight with a dovetailed front sight and cylinder choke.
