Okay, I have an old 700 Classic stock that I just didn't like. Cheap looking finish and no recoil pad. I have stripped it and found out why they use that opaque stain on their stocks-the wood is two colors, on one side of the stock it is whitish blond and on the other side it is a very pretty red with dark grain. Must be a heartwood/sapwood cut of the tree.
So here is the plan: pick a recoil pad, cut the stock to LOP, mount the pad, refinish the stock, and do a glass bedding job. This will be a first on all counts except the refinishing.
The rifle is a 7-08, but I have a bad shoulder. The R3 pad on my synthetic stock is fantastic. But the ones for sale say for synthetic stocks only. Kickeez, Hogue, Pachmayr, who? Who makes a pad as good as the gel R3 that is grindable and can be screwed to a wood stock?
