Gaucho .45 Colt
« on: January 30, 2006, 07:24:00 PM »
Mine is on the way back to the repair shop in Miami tomorrow for repeated failure to fire factory Magtech ammo and my reloads.  Neither of my RBHs had a problem with the same ammo.
I can not get better than a 3 - 4"  group at 25 yards using any loads or the factory ammo.  Cylinders mic 0.457-0.458" and the groove is 0.451".  I have used very soft Lee 255g RNFP, Remington cowboy bullets, commercial 250g RNFP in .452 and .454, and Lee 300g sized to .452".  Powders I have tried are Bullseye, Herco, Unique,  and an old lot of HS5.
This is the second trip to Miami.  They failed to polish the screws on the stainless steel gun.  Stuck out like a sore thumb.
If anyone has experience with this gun and loads to share in this Colt replica please contact me.  I looking for a working load of 900-1000 fps with a 250g bullet.
Many thanks.

Doc, I am sorry to hear about the trouble you have had. Personally based on the last few years, the only Taurus I would consider would be a Raging Bull and that is slowly changing. Not because of lack of quality on the RB but because of the lack of quality on the other models and bad customer service... :D

Received the pistol back from Taurus today along with a note that the transfer bar has been replaced, a recommendation that reloaded ammo not be used, and a target with ten shots in two groups.  Shot at 10 yards with Winchester Cowboy ammo, 250g RNFP at 750fps.  Don't know if machine rest or hand held.  One group all touching, second wih one out.
Also, the hammer screw was replaced at my request.
I have some fireformed brass from this gun set aside.  I'll let you know how it shoots for me.

from what I heard about their customer service, I just took things into my own hands.  I had a revolver problem and ended up opening it up myself and trying to fix stuff....  Not certified, just like to tinker.  An hour of work kept me from giving up my gun for however long.

I made it to the range early today before the rain.  Tried four different bullets with fireformed, neck sized brass, WLP primer, and 7.5g of Herco.  Bullets were Remington 250g Cowboy, Mt. Baldy .45-270, Lee 255g RNFP sized to .452" lubed with NRA formula, and 255g Lee unsized and lubed with liquid alox.  Lee bullets are straight wheel weights.
Worst performance was the unsized Lee with a buck shot pattern.
Remington cowboy bullet shot into a 6" group, 6" high.
RCBS 45-270 shot into a 3" group, 8" high.
Lee sized .452" shot into a 3" group, 5" high.
All shot at 25 yards with sandbags rest.  Ten shots each bullet.
No failure to fire encountered.  Taurus did seem to have repaired this.
Toss up between the RCBS and the Lee bullet.  I do like the front driving band on the RCBS bullet as it seems to center the round in the chamber.
I have decided to quit complaining.  This is about the best I can do in my dotage.  Many thanks for your comments.
