Finally got my suppressor and have begun testing, easy on the ears and reduces recoil to, so far one load is promising with 405gr 457-405-f Lee hollow point mould, 2" 3shot group at 50yds, 2rds touching and a flier 1" wide Regards Howard

Thats crazy! An awesome crazy though. Where do you live at? And who or where did you find one? Also, how long does this make your overall rifle length?

I'm guessing by Hunternz's user name he's from New Zealand....Silencers or moderators/suppressors as the shooters from abroad call them are real common for them, but for the most part are illegal here in the US, specially for sport hunting.

Thats why I was curious where he lived at, US or overseas. Here, A man has to have a sparkling clean record and a lot of paper work to get a license to used supressors. Why? I don't really know. I'd love to silence some of my firearms...can you say 30-06 UltraComp? :)

Howdy,
I am in New Zealand, two gunsmiths specialise in making them for centrefire rifles, mine is from Highcountry sport wwwhighcountrysport.co.nz and wwwgunworks.co.nz is the other
The suppressor is 15" long, my H&R barrel is 18" long and the rifle OAL is 42". Supersonic loads are about the same noise level as a .22magnum yet to shoot a subsonic load but expect it to be around .22lr noise level except that thump fron the 405gr bullet hitting the target. Will post some targets when I have got some accurate loads sorted.
The suppressor cost almost as much as my H&R, but I think it is worth it, reducing recoil, noise (my ears and huntiing dogs ears) and little disturbance to game,

It is  the Howard that hunts with his dogs,
ended up with a new account because I changed internet provider and forgot my password. Duh!!! So because Greybeards didn't recognize my new email address I  opened a new account and new password.
Don't have the technology to take sound readings on supressed and non supressed loads, sorry!
The supressor just screws off, takes about 30 seconds

Nice setting.
You will see mine someday, Nef 45-70 + BR T8. I've too much fun with my new toy to send-it to the smith !. Will look as my 30-30 tactical, Choate varmint and harris already on.
I'm working on the reload. Cast bullets:Lee 457-325-FN, 457-405-FN, 459-405-HB and a new one 457-340-FN,  in the 1050 FPS range. (paper punching only).
H&R are on the wide side for barrel bore, you may have to slug your. They works often better with .459 bullets ( +accuracy, -leading ).

457-325FN  as cast .460  resized .459
457-405FN  as cast .458  resized .457
459-405HB  as cast .464  resized .459
457-340FN unknown for the moment i hope .460


The 405FN would be better "as cast". Resized, gave me light leading.
But, I resized because, i want them uniformly round!.

Making a "valuable" record is not so easy. We need a professional recorder without any compression circuit on the mic line and reference sound with a level known by the listener.
I've made a small video (1Mo) with my digital camera of me shooting my 22H.

(If you get the sound without image, try QuickTime)

 You will ear: the shot, a metal gong hit and falling 50yards away and the sound of the transfert bar when i release the trigger. Again, due to the compression circuit the levels are somewhere false. The sound is louder than in an open space, the range is closed and covered.

With a good suppressor, the sound of a supersonic 22H or a 300Wmag are quite the same. As Howard said, a 22lr supersonic because all which stay is the supersonic bang. The noise is funny, a "crack" without  "volume" and no blast !.

guys you can get a suppressor in the states, its just not as simple as going out and buying one, you have a long paper trial and a $200 stamp but just about anybody that can buy a gun can get a suppressor (note i didn't say silencer)

Gotta love the laws here,  I've got a neighbor who feels it's her god given right to put on a show everytime I go out back to shoot because it bothers her dog.  A suppressor would answer that problem, but why should I pay $200.00 for her problem?  If I wasn't such a nice guy I'd take some sort of pleasure out of returning a few "favors" she and hers blessed me and mine with over the last 14 years and shoot more!  I own 150 acres and still am blessed with loonie neighbors.

New York is one of the states that bans suppressors and NFA weapons....
