what's the true minimum i need to get into BPCR?
« on: March 17, 2003, 05:48:34 PM »
ok, time for me to break down and ask this question.

i've decided that, within the next 12-24 months,  i'm going to buy myself a Sharps reproduction in 45-70 and start shooting BP just for the heck of but i know me, i'll wind up wanting to shoot at least some BPCR type matches.  so....

what are the MINIMUM requirements of a decent (notice i didn't say match winning) BPCR ready sharps repro??

what features does it need to have?   give me as much info as possible.

oh btw due to personal preference and current housing/family situation i will NOT be able to cast my own bullets, so does anyone out there have a suggestion for a top of the line comercial bullet casting company to use???

thank you for your interest/time.   any and all input and advice appreciated.

Cheers,

I'd go with the 45-70.  It's cheap to buy, cheap to shoot - commercial rounds are available, cheap to reload.  It's got enough stopping power to take down ANY thing you want to shoot.

I shoot a 45-110 - I bought her well before the "Quigle - Down Under" craze.  "She's" a beautiful gun - but useless in the "real" world.

I can't shoot her off anything but a "bench" - so if you want to "hunt" yours - buy the best quality that these "goofy guys" recommend!  They do this "sh*t for "fun" and have forgotten more about these guns than I'll ever know!

Well, a good set of sights come to mind for starters.  Myself on my Pedersolli, I use one of the Parts Unknown Soule sights and the Pedersoli tunnel front sight with a full card of optional inserts though a Lyman 17A or similar sight would also work just as well.

Perhaps the place to start with is in doing some serious reading?

The internet is filled with folks who will give you resourceful answers as to what "they" think.  Ater wading thru all the replies the waters could very well be so muddy that your head is swimming also.

Great Reading for the beginer are:

1.  SPG Reloading Primer, by Venturino and Garbe.
2.  Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette Handbook, by Croft Barker.
3.  Black Powder, Pig Lead & Steel Silhouettes, by Paul Matthews.
4.  Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West, by Venturino.

For about $100.00 the four publications will reveal more than one can evaluate in one reading of each.  They will remain as constant reference works for the remainder of your life.  Mostly they will reveal what you personally will determine as to what you don't want!

Trying to find a "bargain" purchase in a black powder silhouette rifle can lead to some real reduced quality items.  You can bet if the various firearms manufacturers are NOT mentioned in the above publications, there is good reason.  Ditto with accessories (sights) and loading components.

Monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly publications are also great investments.  Black Powder Cartridge News, Single Shot Exchange, Shoot Magazine, etc.

Finding where Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Shoots are held will also add to your knowledge.  Attend a shoot and look at the equipment being used.   Ask questions and be prepared to listen to the multitude of answers and opinions.  Ask more questions.  Surely someone will offer to let you pull the trigger on a few rounds and knock down some steel.  You'll be hooked............

thank you for the replies so far....

the books are on my "to find" list now,  in fact i think a beat up but complete copy one of them is at my local FFL right now.

as for going to matches.  i'm going to attempt to get to the match being held this coming Sunday (march 23) in Colombus TX by the Yaupon Creek Silhouette Association.   they are the nearest BPCR group to me, that i have been able to find.   since a number of the members of their group are alos members of the CAS club i used to shoot with i'm hoping that i can "find a friend" and stick by them through the match a get a better understanding than i would simply watching.

please keep the advice comming   :-)
