Hey Guys____ Just curios, what caliber in a derringer (small) type of firearm, would you think would be most effective. Taking in consideration,effectiveness, controllability and recoil, self defense two legged critters_____ THANKS BAYRUNNER

I like them 45 /410 derringers. But what I carry that is real small is the NAA 22 MAG.

If you must go that small i'd look at the Davis 9mm derringers ,sense feeding is not a problem use the Glazzer Safety Slugs .

Recoil will be controlable and your shots will be at or near point plank range . I think that a small 5 shot .38 spl. would be a better choice and not much bigger .

None. Derringers are hard to shoot and clumsy to carry, and awkward to handle and "deploy". Get something else, like a small auto.

I would not opt for a derringer type gun...I would look into the smaller guns from NAA and Kel-Tec for their small size and ability to carry more than a couple rounds...I'm sure that there are other small guns that people will add but those are the two that I could think of right now.

Now wait a minute, Derringers are no harder to control or deploy than anything else. All it takes is practice. Now, cheap guns are cheap and nothing more needs to be said. A good quality derringer with practice is eaiser to conceal (caliber vs. caliber) than a semi auto or revolver and weighs less. The .45/.410's that I have shot take a LOT of practice to become proficent and they do hurt a bit from recoil. I carry a small back-up 9mm that I keep loaded with 90g XTP's. The recoil is not great, accuracy is point and shoot good. Care for a challenge? Grab a derringer and try to shoot a 10yds holding a group. Move to the 5yd line (where you would most likely deploy it) and you get a great sense of satisfaction.

A derringer is an absolute last option self-defense item and ranks only slightly ahead of swift feet. A five shot 357 snubby such as the Ruger (SP 101?) would serve you a lot better but its your tush, protect it as you will.

I would take a derringer over running any time. I guess some of us have better confidence in our shooting ability that others. :-D

For about the same size as a Derringer, I'd go for the Kel-Tec P3AT. The price is right, the bugs are long-since worked out, and it's controllable. And about half the size of a snubby. I don't own one, but I plan on getting one! But if you opt for the Derringer, the advice about using Glaser Safety Slugs is worth heeding. A lot of the cops I used to work with carried little Beretta 25's with Glasers, and at bellygun range, they will do a number on a bad guy!
