Can anyone suggest a smith that does trigger jobs for the Marlin 336 specifically or any books that discuss smithing the rifle?

I have tons of stuff on my hard drive that I am willing and eager to share if you need. There is one catch though!!!! You must mentor others when you become proficient. Just e-mail me if needed, as I had lots of help when I got started. Heck, I still need lots of help and this is a great place to get it.

I'd look at a Wild West Guns replacement trigger. Expensive, about $90, but drops in and gives an instant and crisp 3 lb pull. I put one in my Marlin recently and love it. Midway, Brownell's, and others have them.

I agree with the previous posters. For tuning ideas I'd also check out LEVERGUNS ? An American Heritage by Paco Kelly ( http://www.leverguns.com/ ), Accurizing the factory rifle by M.L. McPherson and the cowboy action tuning sections at http://www.marauder.homestead.com/irons.html

No way for me to know how much experience you have with this, but there are lots of good ideas out there for tuning these rifles. So have fun, but go slow, understand the consequences before you remove any metal, and if you are uncomfortable with the work involved contact a gunsmith.

Yep,

Realidahorock is my brother that I have never seen. Therefore my Avatar. I will get to meet him in 2007 in Wyoming. Can't wait.
