« on: February 03, 2006, 02:31:11 PM »
Thinking about trading a gun thats been laying around for one of the Ultra Varmint fluted rifles, probably a 22-250. If anybody has one, I was wanting to know what you thought about yours before I went out and got one.  Thank You.

I'm not sure but I thought the Ultra Varmint Fluted (choate stock) came only in 223 and 204?

The 2006 NEF catalog shows the additions of the 22-250 and the 243 as well in this configuration :D

Like kykiller I've been thinking about getting a H&R rifle in 22-250 or .243win but would like a little info on how they shoot, quality oif the trigger...etc before I buy one. In my case the rifle would just be used for prarie dogs. When I go dogging I take two to three rifles and a single shot H&R would not be a problem at all.

I bought a UVF in 22-250 back at the end of July. I put over 500 rounds through it, 120 rnds. of factory and the rest was handloads. As far as accuracy... I was very dissappointed! I followed all the procedures as far as prepping the barrel. It was no use. The first shot would always be off by 8 to 10 inches. Then the hotter the barrel got the shots would center themselves. But for the first three rounds, I did not know where they were going. It came with a very good 3.1 pound trigger pull. And when I picked the gun up, off hand it felt great. But off the bench, I hated it. Very hard to get the gun set in the bags.
I just sent the reciver off to H&R to get a .223 fluted barrel and a set of Camo Monte Carlo stocks for it .
Just my experience.

What a waste of good barrel steel. There are simply too many rejects for no good reason.

If I were in the market for a new varmint rifle for PDs, I'd be going for the 204.

I've got one of the 22 250 fluted barrels, and was very dissapointed with the factory ammo.(4" groups) But the first handloads with the 40 B.T.'s and 40 grs. of IMR 4064 went into 1/2". I don't know if it will do it consistanly or not since I put it up and started shooting another barrel. Demag 41 tried the same load, and it did'nt work for him.  Digger

I have Fluted Varmit in 223 and 204, just cleaned them up and shot them. Haven't cleaned them since, both shooting 1/2" to 1/4" groups......

Great! I just ordered a .223 fluted barrel in the pistol grip stock. It's good to hear they shoot accurate. Should be by Wednesday 8th. About one more month and it's "ground hog be gone" time! My .223 in the heavy barrel laminate stock shoots almost 1 inch groups, I know it's me and lack of practice. Likes the Winchester white box 40 for $13.98.
Thanks for the good shootin report,
