Got My Super Blackhawk- Problems
« on: February 03, 2006, 07:54:17 PM »
Just got my super blackhawk today (4 5/8" stainless) and I think I like it. I took it appart and cleaned/oiled it up and brushed out some of the scratches that so typically come from the factory I all so gave it the "poor mans trigger job" and it has a nice trigger pull just the way I like it. My concerns are #1: each of the chambers in the cylinder has quite rough machining marks on the inside. I can actualy see the machining rings. The fired case from the factory hase the little machining rings imprinted in it. Also the primer from the fired case has a lighter secondary firing pin strick(Is the firing pin bouncing?). Is any of this normal? The quality control at Ruger must be way down. The sides of the front sight are also very poorly blued- looks like a crap cold blue job. And the last thing is that the ejector rod tube must be tapped on to get it back on and the front where it screws on sticks up until you cinch the screw down when you are putting it back on. My freedom arms might have me spoiled but I have owned rugers before and don't remember seeing any of this.
Suggestions?
Thanks guys, I am gonna shoot it in the morning and I will post back soon after.

Thanks for the reply.
It just seems like a lot of trouble to send it back. Won't they have to send it back to me through an FFL? It would be expensive too right?
I don't know I will have to see how it shoots first.
Thanks again

I sent my Ruger Blackhawk back to Ruger in December to get a new site as the old one was a little crooked. I sent it UPS overnight which is the only way you can ship a pistol. It is now done and will be shipped back to me next week. I don't think it will go to an FFL, it will come straight to me since it is not a purchase. They have not asked me for an FFL in my area.
Any other feedback here??

State laws may differ from fed--and WI is just California light, but even here, Fed Ex will pick up at your home or business and send direct to manufacturer and back to you direct without using an ffl dealer---I have done this to and from SSK a couple of times. However, a dealer may ship UPS at their price if they are kind enough to do so. I did this once when I lived in South Carolina---dealer sent my gun to S&W for about 8 bucks, gun was repaired at no charge and shipped back to the dealer at no charge---this on a 10 year old 629 that I had highly modified by Magnaport with their Stalker package----had a stuck case in the cylinder and it was my fault---kudos to S&W---don't expect the same from Ruger in an older gun, but yours is new.  :( Gene

Reading your concerns and combined with my own issues is why someone is coming to look at my last Ruger today.  Hopefully he will buy it and then I will have no more of them.

Never mind about sending it back. I just shot it and it was AWSOME! Very accurrate. Easy hits on boulders out to 200yards even with the short barrel. It all so must have a very tight cylinder/barrel gap because it shot very clean through 100rounds much cleaner than my Smith. Recoil is impressive. My first shot was a 300 grain black hills factory load and it split the skin between my thumb and forefinger and also split my middle knuckel open. There was blood spattered all over the gun with only two shots. There will be some shooting gloves in order. My mild handloads(10grs Unique/240gr SWC) were a joy though. My Magnum handloads (22.5grs W296/240gr XTP)had very immpressive muzzle flash. The firing pin strick was PERFECT -best I have seen right in the center and perfect depth. The only thing I MAY do to it is have the cylinder chambers reamed and polished so they don't leave the maching mark impresins in my brass. I wonder if my sizing die will take care of that?
Thanks again all for the help.

The ejector issue is common in my experience.

As far as the chambers, they're usually not as bad as you described, but they're never finished to a mirror finish. You can easily polish them out a little with a drill, a slotted cleaning jag, and a piece of fine sand paper.

Fold a piece of the sand paper over, and push it through the jag so that it makes a sort of "flapper". You can run it through the chambers a few times, and polish out the worst marks. Just be carefull, and don't go crazy with it.

1.  Use some 0000 steel wool, power drill, and Flitz polish.  Use a small drill bit and run the drill backward to keep the steel wool on the bit.  Use this to polish the cylinder.

2.  Dimple on the fired case from factory likely came from another gun or something else.  Per your latest post, you have already confirmed firing pin ok.

3.  Most of the aluminum ejector housings have to be lightly tapped into place.

4.  Use a Birchwood Casey Sight Black Pen or a permanent marker and 'paint' the front sight blade.  Use some masking tape on the stainless base to keep it clean.

5.  Use a little imperial sizing die wax with a carbide sizing die to size your brass.  If cylinder polished per 1 above, you will have no marks in your brass.

Now that you know it shoots out to 200, go shoot some silhouette animals.
