I've always like the 40S&W for a defense cartridge. However, the pole asked what is the "best" manstopper. While there are some BIG & powerful cartridges available they may not be suitable for a typical defense format handgun.
Give me the 40 S&W along with some 135-155gr ammo and I'll be comfortable. Not that the 180gr bullets won't get the job done but I prefer the lighter/faster bullets for defense.

Well, thanks for the info. I wanted a smaller frame gun for carry, etc., consequently enter the Ruger P944 and have been trying to decide whether to go with the 180 grain or the 155 gr., ie: Speer Lawman ammo. Been also thinking hard about that new Federal FMJE 'that none of the dealers seem to be able to get from Federal yet'. Been hearing some pretty good things about that load.
My aim is to hit what I am shooting at!

I carry a 1911 45acp 200 jsp in my truck, and a 44sp snubby when needed on person with 240 grn hard cast flat points. Shoot them to the ground is what I believe in. I believe the big bore is the way to go, center mass multiple hits. I went with a nurse some years ago and she told me of many gun shot victims. The one thing I really remember is the ones shot with a 22. She said we fix them up they seem fine, we send them home and they die.

The .357 snub nose revolver, with 125 grainers. Shot placement is everything. As hunters we are told to shoot for a good solid clean kill. When we are talking self defense it's aim for the most body mass. Most personal defense situations occure at 20 ft or less. I have been taught by professionals to aim for the pelvis area. When we hit bone on animals they go down. Just my opinion. I love topics like this that just keep going and going.

An atomic bomb... any projectile weapons have no guarantees since the hit has to be direct.

As has been mentioned already, shot placement is the key. A .22 short into the cranial cavity will work but delivering it is problematic. The much touted .45 will also work with a head shot (again cranial cavity) but accuracy is necessary. Body shots with any caliber might or might not stop the perps actions... too many variables there.

Plain and simple... there is no such thing as a guaranteed "one shot stopper" regardless of caliber. Even a shot to the hip isn't necessarily going to make the bad guy stop trying to do harm... all that will do is put him onto the ground where he can continue to shoot at you.

I think threads like these are valuable in that it makes people understand practice, practice, practice, with the firearm carried is absolutely necessary. But more important, these threads point out that a defenders state of mind is vital.... never rely on the first shot to end the action but keep shooting until the threat is gone regardless of the caliber of the gun.
The longer I live, the older I get.
Neither has anything to do with wisdom.

I have to put my thoughts on the 10mm into this and yes I voted for the 10mm(Colt Delta Elite and Glock 20).
It's simple the 10mm can do everything all of the other rounds can do and everything that they can't.

Yeah, the 10mm is a hummer! I have a couple. I most frequently put my trust in the old 11.5mm. NOTHING is is sure thing. I have seen a man drop at the sound of the shot. A missed shot, that is! And at least two coutinue to fight after suffering fatal wounds from major caliber ordinance. Statics mean NOTHING!!! It all depends on the state of mind of the combatant. "Aim for the head or pelvic girdle"--------yeah, right!!! You'll be lucky if you hit the target at all, you won't know how many shots you fired---------if you fired at all! Gotta love these discussions!!!

I'm locked in an empty room with an assailant who's about to bash my brains in with a large, heavy object, and I have one gun and only one round in the gun. What gun? Lots of choices that are not mentioned come to mind, but as far as handguns are concerned, the .44 mag would be my choice, hands down. Only one shot, I'm not caring about recoil, rapidity of fire, or recovery. It's most likely to kill or incapacitate or both, especially if I am off target just a tad. Likelihood is that after one shot, the assailant will still keep coming until one of us drops. I like my chances better to hold him off with the wound he would have from the .44 mag. Certainly others could and would do the job, but given no margin of error I would take the .44 mag.
There is no more humbling experience for man than to be fully immersed in nature's artistry.

Seems to me the 10mm ought to be in there some where. They seem to be about the same energy wise as the 357 mag, Just a thought.

Hey Savage I don't see you volunteering to prove anyone right or wrong...LOL All I know is not many bad guys will hang around while they are on the receiving of a firearm. All I can remember is the LA shootout, with the bank robbers in body armour. It took 1 shot to the head to kill one of them why didn't they aim for the head from the begining. It shows that even the best get overwhelmed when being fired upon. And dam those bad guys had some heavy duty firepower.

Smokem,
There is no right answer to this question. I just carry as large a caliber as I can based on dress and threat level. You are correct in your observation that many times the mere showing of a weapon has put  a BG in flight. For the times that doesn't work, be prepared to put multiple holes in his hide with your gat of choice.

The 125 grain SJHP .357 magnum bullet has been proven to be the most effective stopper.
If at first you don't succeed, by all means try again. But if this doesn't work, give up, because there is no sense in making a darn fool of yourself.

If I had to put my life on the line the 44mag w/200JHP Max Load, but I've carried the 357mag w/125JHP's max load "1597fps" thats just sick and the 45acp w/200JHP's max load.                        BigBill

We can all give our opinions but the empty gallon milk jugs filled with water as targets will sure give us an idea on the power of all these awesome calibers.

There was a state cop here years ago who blew a guy in half with a 357mg with hollow points while the guy had an automatic weapon.  Of course the crap hit the fan about hollow points then but they never said anything about being fired upon by a automatic weapon. :-D

I overheard one day in the ER, a hospital doctor said he hasn't seen wounds like this since he was in Vietnam when they brought a guy in who was shot with a 40cal.

Another time I seen a guy enter the ER with 5 shots from a 45acp in his gut and still live.  So its all about shot placement too. :D

A PEN

TONY BLAIR  stopped 57,000+ men and women dead in their tracks… when he banned pistol shooting in the UK back in 1997. We all handed in our pistols at the local police station/s. We then had to suffer the indignation of watching them be destroyed (thrown into furnaces or chopped up) over and over again, as it was shown on at every opportunity on the TV… Added to which, shooters (Ex shooters) were branded as potential killers, gun-nuts, deranged, evil etc…
We were accused, found guilty and sentenced, and we didn’t even get to go to the trial!! One leading MP (politician) said that anyone who liked guns (I guess he also included our leading sports shooters who represented the UK in the various international comps) were deranged lunatics and should be locked up! (I can’t remember the exact quote)
A year or so later the same MP who happens to be a football fan, was questioned about the problem we have with football ‘fan’ violence (we have a massive problem with that here), and he was asked why should we put up with the violence and damage caused by these louts… it was suggested that football be played behind locked doors ‘televised’ so that there would be non of the associated problems of hoards of drunken fans smashing up neighbouring towns as they rampage on a trail of destruction… his quote was something to the effect of   “why should ordinary law abiding fans be penalised for the actions of others…”  TWO FACED HYPOCRITICAL BASTARD!!

#1. I very highly doubt that any .357 HP is going to blow you in half. It is reports like these that give the whole "stopping power" debate fuel, and simply is obsurd. I would really be interested in seeing that ME's report. It would be a first of anything like that.

#2. And even the .44 Mag has problems. Please read the link below. The story is under the introduction. Yes, this is VERY typical in self defense shootings. A little different than the CCW instructors told ya' huh?

I wasn't gonna weigh in on this, but after 3 pages I've gotten sorta caught up in it you might say. :)  Fortunately I have never been put in a position to use lethal force, but what I know from experience and training is that nothing you can carry is a 100% manstopper. All bets are off when the will to live and to kill are involved. It all comes down to "the fight in the dog"
This is all leading me to a story my teacher once told me. He was on a stakeout at a hotel, stationed outside the door.  Suspect escalates and turns lobby into into a war zone. All shooting is at close range (4-10ft) The guy empties his gun and tries to run out the door. It is at this point that he receives two loads of 00 buck in the back (none sever the spinal column I guess). He proceeds out the door, still carrying open gun at his side, takes 5 or 6 more steps and looking at my friend says "you f-ing pussies had to shoot me in the back" and accordingly falls down dead.
I would agree that this man was dead on his feet, but he still had the presence of mind to hold onto his gun, walk, open a door, and speak.     That's the story, if it came out of this mans mouth it is true and besides that, it is consistent with untold #'s of accounts on the miraculous resilience of the human body. If anything, this just confirms my belief that shooting or being shot by someone " just ain't too good"

Just my 2 cents worth, be healthy and be safe. :D
