Author Topic: Will all barrels have Extractors? (Read 1266 times)

We all know about the recent switch to extractors, but I am curious, what about Shotgun barrels and Slug barrels? Rimfires will still have ejectors, right?
This was mentioned in another topic but do you think NEF/H&R would be open to the idea of requesting a barrel with an ejector instead of an extractor?
Perhaps we will just have to ask and see

Well, this was a quick response. As promised I am posting the response from CS about extractors/ejectors.

I was afraid of that, they should have left the shotguns and rimfires ejectors, or made it an option for the acc barrel program.

Being an NEF newbie can someone explain in detail the difference? It is my understanding that the ejector whips the cartridge out with exuberance while the extractor is a little more gentle about removing the casing. Is this a legal issue like "You'll poke your eye out with that thing" or is this good practice to pull the case with less vigor.

Yeah, that will be a real pain digging out those 17HMR and 22 shells from extractor. Does anyone even reload those things?

The ejector equipped firearms are spring driven and automatic, when working properly, they'll throw the spent case over your shoulder and then some. An extractor just lifts the spent case about a ¼" out of the chamber and then the shooter must pluck it out by hand. The reason the factory switched to extractors was due to sticking cases, but most all of us have remedied that issue if it was a problem. It never was a problem that I'm aware of with rimfires and shotguns.

Rimfire brass isn't reloadable by us mere mortals, it takes a special process to spin the priming into the rim.

Hmmm, Kinda makes ya wonder just where some of these ideas are coming from. Do these corp. guys even go out and shoot the products they are marketing and changing. I mean really go shooting. Out behind the shed or the barn, in a wash or gully out in the pasture and all the other places that we like to go to just get out for an hour or two.

I'm sorry, but an extractor on a rimfire to me is just idiotic. :? :roll:

Who wants to pluck every one of those out? Not me. I'm glad I have my .17 HMR already, it is a shooter and ejector. :grin:

:evil: Bad new on the Rimfires :noway: Thats just stupid, I think. Picking out all spent shells is so tedious, and will hurt sales I believe.
At least all shotgun barrels will stay ejector...but for the "time being"?

People on this post, and some consumers I feel are to blame for the change from ejectors to extractors. Starting about three years ago on the old H&R site people were complaining about the ejectors. They did not like them, they threw the emptys over their shoulders and onto the ground. People called H&R and complained about the ejectors and wanted extractors. They posted many complaints about how inconveniot it was to pick up the empties while shooting from the bench, or when hunting. For months it was whine, whine, whine about the ejectors. Then post on how to modify from ejectors to extractors started showing up. Well H&R heard the whining and responded. Now a good hunting gun, one designed by hunters, has been turned into a bench gun. I'll never buy one with extractors. Ejectors were the main selling point with me.

I specifically waited for the switch to extractors before buying my 22-250. OTOH I would want an ejector on my rimfire and probably on a shotgun, too.

For me, part of the appeal of the single shot hunting rifle is that it forces me to be a more patient hunter. I feel as if I absolutely must wait for a good shot--and make it count. If I were interested in a quick follow-up, I'd be hunting with a semi/pump/lever/bolt action rifle. What's more, as a reloader I really appreciate the extractor.

I'd bet that Handi-Rifle fans are split nearly 50/50 on this one.

they where but not now.

it will be just like the 35 whelen, eveybody wanted one and now that they are coming back with them just about nobody wants them. when will NEf learn you just can't please some people.

My take on the .35 Whelen is that people wanted one with a 26" barrel like the RMEF Whelen. Hopefully they will make some Limited Editions in a 26" again.

we all wanted a 35 whelen now that its not 100% how we like it we don't want it any more. same with the extractors we wanted the stuck case fixed and now they are fixed and nobody likes it.

No offence taken, and I get your point.

Not ALL wanted a Whelen and not ALL wanted extractors.

H&R/NEF will have to live or die by THEIR decision, my point is they missed the mark on both topics. They deceided to make a 22" Whelen instead of a 26" and to put extractors instead of ejectors on their rifles, not US.

I personally have never had a stuck case on any H&R/NEF and all my ejectors work perfectly.

Jennifer at NEF returned my call to her yesterday in response to my inquiry about the availability of 25-06 ejector barrels..I had hopes of picking up a couple more of them,prior to the complete switch over to the extractors for future projects...too late...they are all gone :cry: According to her,the reasoning behind the decision to switch over to extractors is just as Sourdough stated earlier..too many folks complaining on the ejector force throwing the cases way too far and what a pain it was to have to pick up the empties...and as a result of all the complaints...they reduced the spring tension by substituting a weaker spring...and as a result of that we got many stuck case issues where there never was a problem before on many different calibers..and so..because of all the stuck case issues and the amount of complaints they got over that....we now will have the extractors...It seems they do listen...but ...are very selective in what they hear :x

Looks like it's time to hit the stores and and see what they have in stock to be able to get the ones I want that...what a pain...it looks like the secondary market will be the only way to get one for now...cause when they are gone..they are gone...

I hate to hear that Mac. After I got done talking to you the other day, I was going to add a 25-06 barrel to the order..I guess I'll put that back on hold :?
I am glad they listen to some of us consumers, though "selective" as you put it, is right on the money. I guess someones got to draw a line for decisions. I just think it's not based on decisions from actual shooters, more like office suits.

I suppose the extractors will work out ok..I just prefere the ejectors..it just something we will have to get used to unfortunatly for some of us.....stuck cases will be a thing of the past..and that is a good thing...so..I'm off to see what's lurking on some of the pawn shops racks in a little while..who knows what I'll be able to find around here..I do know of a couple good buys about a 3 hour drive from here..but..that's for a rainy day excursion..

Everyone has their own wants or needs when it comes to the ejector/extractor thing..

I love extractors, except on unreloadable rimfires-which I then want ejectors.

Just about every gun I've ever owned was a single shot. I learned how to pull an extracted casing and load a fresh one in nearly one motion. Yeah, its a lil tougher when you have gloves on but not impossible.

I'm in no need either to have super fast reloading of the firearm.. no body is shooting back, nor is the need to take a second shot that necessary to me if I missed the first one. If I was in need of fast reloading, I sure as heck wouldn't pick a singleshot. Thats what semi-autos, pump and lever guns are for.
