just made a trade for a brand new series 70 goverment. Kind of a neat gun with no extened anything no beavertail tiny sights and a short trigger. Been along time since i shot one the way John Browing thought they should be. Cant wait to shoot the crap out of this one.

Lloyd, Good for you! Those old Series 70s were the best of the best for standard production guns. They are also a great platform to build on. Just about all after market parts will work on them. Shoot the snot out of it and let us know how you like it.

Good for you! Congrats. I like those better than the new models.

My only qualm about this type of gun is that the beavertail really is an improvement for the volume shooter. I have a calous on the back of my hand where my 1911 rubs on recoil. A piece of tape at that spot during a long shooting session is a good way of reducing the irritation to that part of the hand.

Good move Lloyd! Better a Colt than some brand that has initials for it's name. Have fun, I'm thinking of putting a gov't hammer and grip safety and thumb safety on my new one. It would just look more proper that way. Enjoy. 44 Man

Sounds like you're giving yourself an excuse to go shopping for a new gun. Leave the new one modern, and go retro with one that was built retro. Consider that while a lot of guys modify their frames to use a beavertail, you may have a harder time retrofitting a beavertailed gun to an old-style "hammer bite" style grip safety.

That's probably well said Questor. I've never had a gun that had the stock Gov't grip safety on it and I may not like it. The closest I have come was a built .45 on an AMT frame with a Colt slide and bomars. That gun had an old beavertail hammer (I did like the look of that hammer!) but had a King's wide grip safety on it. That was a very comfortable shooting gun. I have a Series 70 MK IV Gold Cup on layaway now with the stock Colt set up. I'll have to shoot that a while before I make up my mind. I do have small hands so I may not experience the hammer bite that many do (wishful thinking). And I sure don't mind rounding the bottom edges before I do much shooting either.
