I will be mostly be using it for plinking and carrying in the woods for fox racoon stuff like that, home protection. I will reload some shells but mostly I'll buy the cheap ammo. I have never shot a 9mm i have shot the 40 though what is the diff in recoil, and help would be great

9mm is WAY cheaper to buy than .40- you can get the Winchester WHite Box 9mm extremely cheap, I've seen it for as little as 4.00 a box of 50 when on sale at Wal-Mart.
Recoil is incredibly subjective to the individual shooter and the guns being used-for example, my little kel-tec p11 recoils to me far more than my dan wesson .357 magnum, simply due to the weight and such.
All the XD's I've ever handled felt like they were MADE for my hand, so I think either caliber would be allright recoil wise....

My Springfield is in 45 ACP. It is very accurate.  My Glock 22 is in 40 cal.
As far as recoil goes it doesn't. It is so little it is hardly notisable. The XD should be real close to the Glock.

As far as the 9 goes. I would put it just under the 40 cal. That shooting my guns tho. If your guns are real lite you may get more recoil. :D

the XD is a great choice, I have 2 of them, XD-40 service and sub-compact.
I like the 40 cal, I think it is more confortable to shoot than my little 380, and you can buy a conversion barrel for 150 bucks and have both 40 and 9mm.

if you have not already, go to www.hs2000talk.com and www.pistolgear.com     a truck load of great info and deals to be found there.
