I've settled on a Nikon 4X for my Ruger Number 1 .45-70.

I have a Leupold FX III 6x on mine.  My buddy has a 2.5x Leupold on his no. 3 but is switching to either a 4x or 6x Leupold.

I'd opt for the Weaver K2½x20 if the Prostaff is your price line. The Weaver is used on a lot of DG rifles, so it has a good reputation on heavy recoiling calibers. The Prostaff also has a 75yd parallax setting which may not be ideal for a 45-70.

Ruger ring spacing on the No. 1 rib doesn't allow for much horizontal moving of the scope to get proper eye relief. Make sure you get a scope with ample eye relief. I've got a Leupold 3-9 on mine but with the Ruger extension rings to move the scope back more.

I use the stock scope that came on my #1. It's not great for snap shots, but it works quite well for shots that I can take a little time to acquire the target. Main problem is the small field of view on the Lyman 4x scope.

mm93,
Is that the Lyman Centennial model? I always wanted one of those and still do. Very nice rifle but I bet you don't hunt with it.

marlinman93 I have one of them Lyman 4X Centennial models on my Shiloh Sharps. I never thought about it on a Ruger #1. It looks great.  :D

i like the look of the classic africa hunting rifle so that weaver 2 1/2x20 seems like it would look good and offer enuf eye relief i can shoot the rifle just fine at 75yrd with the open sights the scope will help low light situations and the occasional longer shot  :D what game animals and what distances have you all hunted/shot at?

Yes, that's the Centennial Lyman Ruger. Glad you didn't say how much you'd bet, 'cause you'd lose! It went elk hunting with me last year! Folks think I'm crazy to hunt with it, but I am careful, and it still looks like new.
I don't own anything I don't hunt with, except my factory engraved 1893 Marlin.

 Redhawk,
The Lyman Centennial Ruger came with the scope, box, cleaning rod, dies, mold, etc. all serial numbered to the gun.

marlinman93, I know what you mean about small field of view on the Lyman 4x scope. Like you, I shoot all my guns. Except my Custom factory 45 L/C. My Shiloh Sharps in 45-70 goes with me in the woods. I do have a couple of dings from hunting. If you don't mine me asking, what king of value is your Ruger #1?  :D

Redhawk,
The last time I saw one for sale, it went for $2,500, but it was unfired. I figure mine is probably worth about $1500, since it's been used. Guess I'll never know unless I decide to sell it!

marlinman93, is there the ability to put iron sights on it?

Yes! There are a couple of options for iron sights. Since it uses standard target style 3/8" dovetails, sights with that style base can be quickly installed. Most target shooters use the same style sight base for iron sights, so there a re some great high quality target sights available to fit these bases.
The dovetail bases can also be removed, as they are attached with two screws, and a receiver style rear sight can be mounted at the rear, and the front can use a base that fits the holes, or a base that fits the front target dovetial can be used with a receiver style sight.
The standard Ruger #1 scope base will not fit this gun, without some additional holes.

Thanks for the info. I wondered after seeing your Ruger #1 if my Lyman scope would go on to my Ruger #1.

It's been several years since I've bought Weavers for my rifles but I picked up a 2 1/2 recently to drop as an occasional sight on my 45-70 #1. Normally I would have bought a Leupold but they keep going up and my $$$ seem rather straight lined so I wasn't about to pony up for a sometimes scope. I haven't shot it a lot yet but I have been extemely pleased so far. It's a very nice sight with a clear sight picture, plenty of FOV and eye relief - enough even for blasting out 500 grainers. I don't, at this point, have any regrets about buying the Weaver instead of the "L". An added plus is the fact that I had a very positive experience with Weaver's customer service when I trashed one of their scopes years ago.

I have an old Redfield 1.75 to 5 on mine now.  I picked up another Redfield 1 to 4 with a post, think I'm going to try that now.  Little trimmer scope.  It has been a great rifle.

I suppose it could, but the barrels on these Lyman Commemoratives are different than other Rugers. The contour is a pretty straight taper, and they are clean barrels with no other attachments, or hangers like most Ruger barrels. They also seem to be a little bit heavier.

:cb2: I know some folks will turn their noses up at getting a Simmons, but I put a Simmons 4x shotgun scope on my .45-70 because it had 5.5 inches of eye relief. Has a better picture than my Burris or Leupold. Now it's not on a #1, but I guess it would probably work.

superdown,
I went with a new Weaver k 2.5, the scope lasted 1 trip to the range, the reticle fell down inside the tube. Weaver replaced it, made it through a couple of trips to the range, less than 100 rds and could no longer hold zero when I took the scope off you could jiggle the reticle around, I gave it to my brother for an old Weaver k4 w/ post reticle. my brother sent the k2.5 back and it is fine on his mini 14, the old steel tube plano, tx. k4 is doing just fine with over 600 rds thru it. For what its worth.    Dune
