IMR Trail Boss for plinker loads in large rifle cartridges?
« on: February 06, 2006, 07:41:21 AM »
Any body given any thought to using Trail Boss in large rifle cartridges for plinker loads?  I'm thinking of 375 H&H and 458 Winchester.

Right now I have a ,oad for the 375 H&H that puts out a cast 270 grain bullet at around 1300 fps with reasonable accuracy.  I'm wondering how Trial Boss might work for this sort of thing.

It's siad to be almost as quick as Bullseye but weight for weight it takes up much more volume.  They put nine ounces in the same jug that holds a pound of any other powder you can name.

I wish IMR had more load info.  With a new powder you would think they would try to increase uses.  I want info on using a 170 gr cast bullet and Trail Boss.  I called IMR and they said they only tested it with a 160 becasue that is the only bullet they had on hand.  DUH!  With the interest in rifle reduced loads for Cowboy Action you would think they would put a little more effort into the market development end.

I don't load to max loads myself so I always have some wiggle room, but I would have no problem using load data for a bullet within 10 grains of the one I have.  You are well within the varriance you would have for barrel length, bore condition etc.  What I am saying is that the powder charge reduction for a bullet 10 gr. heavier than the one published is small.  well within the allowance you may adjust yourself to the published data for the performance of your gun against the test gun.  rule of thumb, lighter bullets need more powder heavier less.  nock off a few tenths load and assess.  Again, I am not talking Max range. That is what I was thinking of doing, however, being new to reloading it is nice to hear that makes sense from someone with more experience.
