Idea for a project: 221 Fireball AR-15
« on: February 06, 2006, 09:22:15 AM »
I did some research on this cartriage, and my dad just loves it in his new XP-100 (he plans on keeping it in 221 after he shot it, before he planned on rechambering it to 6 BR). I though this would be a fun round in a 11" barreled AR (with extended flash suppressor to make it legal of course). However, would you have to modify the mags to make it chamber correct? Would you need to changing the recoil spring? Also, do you think a 1x9 twist would stabilize 40-60 gr bullets at Fireball velocities? Do you think you could use heavier bullets if you wanted to in this twist rate?

Just currious, you really plan to use 40-60gr bullets in the .221?  The small case capacity will be greatly reduced with the longer bullets.
My data is for to the 35gr max weight in the Fireball.
It would be a novel project if that what you want. You'd need a good supply of brass, and a good progressive loader. A brass catcher would be a good idea too! Let us know how it turns out.

savage,
i wasn't trying to be a wise guy, but i thought i missed something. i'm all about a new project, and sometimes less is more. i like the .221fb cartrige, but it seems easier to download the .223. than to go to all the trouble making it work where the .223 allready rules.
how about a tac. .20 ? that seems like a cool project. kind of a .204 ruger on steroids in a ar-15 platform. if interested, go to  saubier.com
  good luck
p.s. a friend has a savage bolt gun with shillen barrel in .221 fb. that shoots in the 2's on a calm day.
