6.8 Rem SPC range report
« on: February 06, 2006, 04:52:51 PM »
Made the mistake of getting ahold of Ed this week and now I have a 6.8 spc carbine barrel for my G2.  Ed has some ammo so I got a box of the Remington 115 gr OTM.   Ed had good things to say about the 6.8. Previous stuff I had seen on the internet had people getting nearly 2750 from 22-24" barrels.  I chronographed two rounds and got about 2615 fps.  I do not know if it being a brand new barrel would make any difference in muzzle velocity, but I was a little dissappointed since the advertised velocity is 2800 fps.  However the accuracy was good. Once I got it on the paper at 100 yds I shot a 3 shot group that measured 0.69 inches.  Then a 5 shot group at 100 yds.  3 of the 5 were in the x ring (0.69" again) and one was on the border between 9 and 10, had one flyer still in the 9 that I probably pulled after seeing the first one in the bull.  The 4th shot opened the group to 1"and the flyer made the group total group 1 7/8".   Very little kick but some muzzle blast and a little barrel rise.  I have some Silver State ammo on order.  I called them and asked about muzzle velocity and they thought I would get around 2775 fps with their 110gr pro hunter load in the carbine.  I will chrono it and see.  They said they had to reduce the load in their 115gr because it was a little too hot for the AR rifles to cycle well.  Remington appears to have backed off their loads 150+ fps or so since some of their reported early loads.  Anyone else chronographed any recently made factory ammo in a encore or contender carbine?  Anyone got any info on handloads other than what is posted on IMR and Hodgdon sites?  I think I am really going to like this caliber and despite what one article indicates handloads should be able to equal or better the box of factory ammo that I have.

The report that I heard was that they are using a special powder that is not available to handloaders.  I heard this a long time ago and I do not know if it is true.
....make it count

In order to get near 2800 fps with a 115 grain bullet they must be using powders that handloders cannot get.  I got some Hornady ammo and some Silver State in and I will chrono them hopefully next weekend.  The Silver State comes in little boxes more like 223 comes in sometimes with no foam so they take up very little room.  The Hornady box quotes 2550 fps out of apparently a 16" barrel.  It will be interesting to see what it does out my 23".

I had a Remington Light tactical with the 22" barrel and was getting 2,705 fps with the 110 gr. V-max (using handloads of course).

Never fired any factory ammo.

I e-mailed Ramshot and they forwarded some loads for the 6.8 SPC.  I also have a 23" rifle barrel.  Have shot only Silver State ammo to date.  Makes pretty little mushrooms..deadly little mushrooms, when fired into wet phone books..

Which of the RamShot powders are you using for the 6.8?  I'm working on some 130gr loads now, but haven't tried any RamShot powder.
