New Glass for the -06 UltraComp..Suggestions?
« on: February 07, 2006, 10:54:59 AM »
Well, sadly my 308 project is now suspended, However sense my 30-06 comp barrel is already a crazy shooter,  I figured it's time for some new glass to dress her up for target work. Stock will be the Choate Varmint. If the forend doens't work out then at least the buttstock will be worn.

-My budget is $200 Max.
-Need some decent power, 14x min to 24x Max
-Looking for a Mil-Dot, Dot, Fine cross hair, German Post..etc, I'm straying away from all the "Plex" reticles.
-I'm not a big fan of Illuminated reticles, I feel them to be too bulky.
-I also want to stay under a 50mm Objective.

I'm still undecided, but here is what I am looking into:

Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 Mil-Dot
http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3329

Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mil-Dot
http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3252

Mueller 8.5-25x44 Tactical Mil-Dot
http://www.muelleroptics.com/
Not real sure how far away it focuses out to though?

Swift 6-18x44 Mil-Dot  688M
http://www.swift-optics.com/products/sporting/premium_riflescopes/688m
I have never been real impressed with the Swift scopes I have looked through, however I never actually used one of their Premium line either. The light trans isn't as good as the Bushnell Legend, it's rated at 80%...

If I did save up just a little more, these would be a consideration, but would they be worth the little extra over my other choices?
Nikon Buckmasters

Weaver Classic V
http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&src=iF12&prodID=SN849409

This will be mated to my 30-06, but this is a compensated barrel, plus It will mostly be shot from a bench or Bi-Pods (because its MAD loud to hunt with!). So recoil is limited but eye relief would be at least 3". This is sufficient for me and my application here.

Open to some feedback :toast:

I have one of the 4 to 12 Swift AO scopes and it is excellent.  The light transmission on the one you are looking at is less because you are comparing an 18X scope to a 15X scope.  They will give you a new one if anything goes worng forever.  Larry

True, Swift does have an awesome return policy. One of the best, and I do have a dealer close to me.
The 14x model has the same, so it says:

The Tactical AO is adjustable to infinity, with indexing to 300yds and infinity.

I think the only thing that holds me back from the Mueller is perhaps that it's noted as being developed for small calibers and has short eye relief being such.
It's not like I couldn't use it on my -06 but I just want something that "Fits" if that makes sense? Then again if It didn't, I cold always put it on the 223....Humm

on the weatherby website i saw that they are building some package Vanguards, using the bushnell banner as the scope for that set up.   they use a 3-9X40.    you can obviously expect that some of those bushnells are on some hard-kicking Vanguards........   weatherby wouldn't put a piece of junk on them, would they?    sure, you can find a cheap simmons (although simmons does make some good scopes) on some other brands, maybe the savage package rifles.   but i don't think weatherby would do any such.

i'd go with the Bushnell Legend, because i like what i see in most of the Bushnell scopes.    apparently Weatherby agrees.

take care,

ss'

ps: coincidentally, my .270 Vanguard -- a Wal Mart $250 dollar BUY about 1 1/2 years ago during their clearance -- sports a long-eye-relief Banner that works very well.   it lets me call my shots.   it's the only scope i've tried on that rifle.     a Legend would be even better is my guess.

Since it's a target gun, a little weight in the stock wouldn't hurt, Sam Spade has his mounted on a 6mm-284, not a heavy kicker, but not a .223 either. The internals of the Tactical are the same as the Eraticator and the 4-16x50 Tactical, it just has ¼moa clicks instead of 1/8, so I wouldn't worry about durability, just the eye relief issue, although it has been used on a .308 which has similar recoil to the '06.

For the most part I was leaning towards the Legend. Still kinda am.

Who / where are these "Super Sniper" scopes made by/where? I've never seen them before.

I do like the Mueller Tactical scopes, but I want a Non Illuminated reticle. Just bulk at the eye I don't need or like much.

The Super Sniper is sold by SWFA.  Is manufactured to their spec and they are the sole distributors.  Supposed to be awesome.  Pretty much universal good reviews, but I have read about turrets breaking and something about replacing O-rings in the turrets.  Kinda hazy memory there.

Two guys I know use the Elite 3200 10x40 on tactical type rifles.  Have a great rep, but no AO.  They seem very durable reading reviews.  Massive honking turrets though.  Advise you handle it in person first.  Digital Photo Club and Amazon.com have both had it for $135 in past month.

I have the 5-15 Legend.  Love it.  Can't say enough good about it.  Use it strictly for paper.  VERY bright.  Was the only way to get the features that I wanted for $200.  Wanted AO and 14-15 power with Mildot.  The AO works easily, it is a little big, Straight Shooters airgun people rate it for heavy recoil airguns if you want to move it to an airgun later....Basically I sat an studied where to put my $200 for a long time.  I dig it.

All that praise aside, it is NOT as clear as my VX-2.  At first glance it is as good or better than most scopes that I have looked at.  The AO focuses down to something like 20 feet and when you get it just right it is impressive.  But, after looking through it for 2-3 hours and then changing rifles to the 223 with the Leupold...the clarity is obvious.  More of a color and polarization thing.

All things being equal I would get a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14 SF AO Mildot from Jon for $249.  That thing rocks.

Arron:

My preference is for the 8x25 tacticle..3" of eye relief is plenty with the UC..I just mounted my 4x16 Illuminated tacticle on a 7mm Mag..and will be shooting it later this week..it too has a muzzle brake on it..One thing to remember..if you want to hunt with it..give Wayne a call and have him make a thread protector for it..and just unscrew the muzzle brake off..and it back on..then you can have the best of both worlds :D

For the most bang for the money, the Mueller and Bushnell Legend is what I keep narrowing it down too of my choices.
The Legend would probably be all I need, though the extra-and actual useable power- of the Mueller would be a nice perk.
Besides, like I said, if it don't "Fit" right it can always "Fit" right on my 223Ultra barrel.
A 30mm tube is great though. But I can't stray out of my $200 mark that much.

How much was that Thread protector, $50 or so? Still not a bad idea, and plus too that barrel can shoot. I'm very happy I got one :agree:

Seems like for $200 these 2 are the best choices out there, the Legend and Mueller.

check this one out:

http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=SN&prodID=SN800964

I have one of these, although, not in the mil-dot, and the quality is quite good, very clear, fantastic eye relief.

I am biased though, it seems that Simmons is all I buy anymore, never have had 1 problem, even with high-recoiling rounds like the 45-70 (6.5-20x50 44 mag)

my 2 cents...

I have tried this Simmons before. I personally didn't care for it. It was on a 7mmMag. The eye relief was alright, yes, but the field of view i felt was limited, and got pretty dark when turned up.
By all the research I have been looking at, I think I'm swaying towards the Mueller.

where is the Mueller manufactured?

the Bushnell Legend probably comes from a free country.   even the Banner is made in Korea instead of coming from China.   the Legend is a step up i would believe.

my Phillipines-manufactured Simmons Pro_50 in 2.5-10 power is a very good scope.   i'll buy Korean, Jap', or Phillipino way ahead of a Chinese.

The Tacticals are built in China, have Japan made glass and who knows where all the rest of the components come from. I don't care too much where a product is made so much as I care whether the product is worth the money and the mfr stands behind it if I have a problem with it. I have 6 Muellers so far, I've had no problems with any of em. From all I've read on them, Mueller is tops in warrantee coverage on the few that I've read of that had problems. I don't see where it's made as being an issue if you get more than what you paid for as is the case with Mueller Optics.

SS, do you have any electronics, TV, etc in your home??? Take a guess where most of em are made!!

40yrs ago consumers shunned Japan made products, well, China is today's Japan.

I am thinking of getting one of the Meller Scopes.   I was reading a thread a while back where Rich from Mueller was answering questions about the scopes.  I can't locate the thread again.  It was either here or at RFC.  Anyone else know where it is?

Tks.

It would be in the Optics forum here, the only posts he's made at RFC are on the RFC scope thread made in the last couple days.
