375 Whitworth

JJ.
I've got a 375 Whitworth on the way with a Model 70 style 3 position safety, magnum (lengthened) magazine follower and Warne QD rings and bases under a Leupold scope. What else would I need to do to this rifle to improve it's functioning.  I probably will never use it on dangerous game with the possible exception of bears.
Thanks.

Wow that sonds like a winner all around! One thing you can do that will only cost a few bucks and add another backup source for shooting is to get an Ashley outdoors rear peep sight that will clamp right onto the Warne QD rear base. It's a ghost ring rear that I have used to shoot popcan accuracy at 100 meters. Should the scope break with the QD's this tiny little rear sight improves your shooting so much and just slaps right on the Warne bases. I guess I assume that you have open sights or there would be no reason for the QD rings?

After that I like my triggger set to 2.8 lbs and with a very sharp breakover. Thats a cheap adjustment for a gunsmith. Once done though make sure you have no AD but bouncing the recoil pad on the ground with the safety off (and unloaded) to make sure it will not fire on you.

At the same time he could bed the reciever for you. With a wood stock swelling and drying can be a problem although less likely with a bigger bore due to the heavy barrel.

Then load up some 270 hornady bullets with 75 grains of RL-15 and a standard rifle primer(not a magnum primer) and shoot the heck out of it. When you decide to shoot something really big or on an expensive trip load up some 270 Aframes. Also keep your eyes peeled for the 270 Hornady interbonds. That will be the bullet to shoot! It will have a high BC and should shoot much flatter then the 30/06 with a 180 grain bullet.

What a magic combination that will be!

JJ,
Thanks for the reply, I'll be looking for that Ashley sight, I've always liked that style of sight anyhow.  In the mean time I think I'll work with the express sight and set it up for 300 gr bullets at 100 yds, sort of a last resort/deep do-do combination.  The trigger breaks at 3.5 lbs which I like for the time being.  I haven't had the stock off to check bedding yet, at the very least I think I'll have someone look at the recoil lug to ensure it's making full contact.  Thanks for the load ideas, I'm looking forward to working up some new loads, it's been a few years since I spent some serious range time with a 375.
Best.

JJ,
Thanks for the reply.  I'll look into that Ashley sight, I've always liked that style of sight anyhow.  In the mean time I think I'll work on the express sight and see if I can set it up for 300 gr bullets at 100 yds, sort of a last resort/deep do-do combination.  The trigger is now at 3.5 lbs, I think until I've spent a good bit of range time with the rifle, I'll leave it there.  I haven't had the stock off yet but I'll check the bedding to at least make sure the recoil lug is making full contact.  Thanks for the load ideas, it's been awhile since I've spent some serious range time with a 375 so I'm looking forward to that.  My last 375 was an Interarms MkX Alaskan and I was quite pleased with it's accuracy, hope this one does as well.   Thanks for the expert advise.
Best.
