Next season I will begin trapping coyote and bobcat in Montana. For just those two species, I was thinking of stocking-up on some #2 coilsprings.

I think this is OK for coyote, but is a #2 a good trap for bobcat? If I just wanted to get one size, would the #2 be OK, or would a #3 be better for bobcats?

Any other suggestions?

Do conibears work on bobcats? If so, would they be better than a leghold?

If you go with a #2 go with bridgers even better yet #3 bridger are hard to beat for cats and yotes!yottey

I started trapping yotes with 1.75's...and i still trap them most of the time with those, and I have caught a few cats in them at yote sets too...but ive missed more due to the cats big foot and the lack of guiding at yote sets. For cats sets, I use nothing but #3's and guide them heavily with pencil size sticks and small dirt clods.

I wouldent set a #2 specifically for cats but thats just me.
why not buy #2's for yotes and bigger traps for cats....or for that matter....if i had to do over, i would have all #3's for yotes and cats.

others do it differently im sure...lets do some other ideas

I would say go with a #3. We use to use exclusivly #3s on both coyotes and cats. We have recently added some #2 bridgers, but the only reason for that is that with the smaller jaw spread helps with the avoidance of mountain lions. If we didn't have them friggin things around I wouldn't touch anything less than a #3.

Go with #3's. Go with the largest jaw spread you can use by law. Big cats have BIG feet and one does not need that big foot standing on the pan and jaw or dog at the same time. Better yet, go with a dogless #3! Ace

I like my #3 northwoods double longs and my #4 newhouses, but to offer them as a recomondation is tough because of availibity and price!RdFx has seen the way my gear is set up mountain lion pruff

Asa one of the best bobcat traps ever made was the 14 victor I even held a 150 pound black bear in one in Arizona

The #3 Montana is a good dogless yote and bobcat trap according to some of my customers,thats what it was made for.

If you liked the Monty dogless traps you'll be very pleased with the Montanas. They have all the features of the old Montys plus have beefier frames.
