Hi all great messge board well my question is on the 45-70 i am new to this gun as well as this caliber all laod data is devided on three action lite medieum and strong(ruger#1)where does the NEF stand as an action .What load data should i use i would like to push it to its max but want to stay safe as well.

My understanding is to use the #2 loads (Marlin levergun). I currently use Alliant R7 (50.0grs) and Remington 300 gr bullets for a velocity of 1950fps. If I do my part 3 shots at 100 yds touch. This load really hammers deer. I believe you can use more of this powder but I haven't found it in print as yet. If you don't handload Buffalo Bore loads some very stiff loads, like a 300gr at 2350fps that are handi safe.

I too asked the same questions when I got my handi in .45-70. I got the same answers too. Then reality set in much in part from Quick ..... this cartridge has been around along time and has taken it's fair share of game non of which are any bigger or tougher now than they were then. Load up if you want to but the trap door ammo will get the job done without removing your shoulder too.

The SB2 frame on a late madel 45-70 will handle loads up into the level 3 ruger loads, but most shooters find the recoil too much unless other steps are taken to reduce the felt recoil, like adding weight to the stock bolt hole and/or upgrading the recoil pad. As has been said, if range is held to 150 yds or less, even the trapdoor levels are sufficient for taking most north american game. If you want to extend the range over 200yds, heavier charges are needed to keep trajectory flat which can be punishing on both ends!! My 2400+fps 300gr nosler partition load has a MPBR of 242yds with an 8" kill zone, which is fine for elk in the areas I hunt.

So far my testing using adi powder 2208 when I approach max loads with the leveraction level, acuracy starts to suffer with 300gr Hornady hp so settled for a load according to the manual gives about 1800fps which is comfortable to shoot, further testing at the range tomorrow :grin:

The 300gr Hornady is designed for trapdoor loads, so that's a good move, Howard. :wink:

Thanks guys so my deduction from all three ansers is it is safe but not desirable due to heavy recoil.I may try a phew round of .458 barnes X in 300gr what i read this past week is that bullet has to have a minimum of 1400fps to doo its job that would mean pushing it at a minimum of 2000fps at the muzzel in order for it to doo its job out at 100y. :?

My "Ultra" 45-70 likes the 300 grain Remington pushed by 51 grains of H4198.

Another very accurate load out of my rifle is a 405 grain hard cast (Lee 459-405HB), pushed by 30 grains of H4198.

Both of these loads will produce 3/4" inch groups. The 405 grain load will group with all holes touching if I do my part.
