Model 88 Winchester in 308
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:11:51 AM »
I will have the chance to purchase a Mod 88 in 308 next week.  I would like some information on these.

What accuracy at 100 yds are you getting?  What type of scope?
Reliability of this design?  I have just started researching, so thanks for all the information you may share.

I have one which I bought in 1985.

I haven't measured my groups but they appear to be right around an inch at 100 yards with a 2-7x scope cranked up.  Since then I have replaced it with a 2 1/2X Weaver and the groups opened up a tad.  My rifle is very tolerant of differences in ammo, there is no discernable change in group size with various loads.

Mine has been very reliable.  It was made in 1955, the year they first came out.  I had the firing pin break and eventually was able to get a replacement.  The fellow who sold me the new firing pin said that this was a problem and that Winchester had two upgrades.  Since then I have used a snap cap when dry firing.

The trigger pull is notoriously mushy.  This is a design problem.  While I have heard of gunsmiths being able to fix it, I have never met one who would.

Otherwise it has been a great gun.  I am sure you will like it.  Hope the price is right!

Thanks for the information Winter Hawk!

The price is around the $300 mark.  I am guessing pretty fair since these look very similar to the Savage 99's.  I still have to check the condition.

Sounds like a good price to me!  Mine cost $225 20 years ago, and the stock had been cut down (poorly).  I scabbed on a piece of ash to bring it back to proper length.  If it is in good condition you won't be sorry if you pick it up.

If it in at least decent shape, that is a good deal.  The lowest I have seen them at gunshows in my area is $450+.  I have one and love mine.  Mine has been re-barreled to 7mm-08, though.

I have a pre-64 model 88 in 308 Win. that my father bought when he was 16 (1962). I'm not really a Winchester fan except for this rifle. It's probably the best al round deer rifle I have ever owned. Shoot two with it so far. It's been as reliable as any rifle I've owned. Shoots around a one inch group at 100 yards. I love mine!
