Camp Grayling Long Range Artillery Match
« on: February 09, 2006, 12:30:31 PM »
The dates for the Grayling Long Range Artillery Match are July 21, 22, 23.  This is an excellent artillery event.  Full scale guns use full charges.  Ranges for rifled artillery are 1000 yards, smoothbore 500-600 yards, seige mortars 900 yards, coehorns 200 yards.  These ranges may be somewhat different this year since we will be on a different range.  As I get information I will keep you posted.

Artilleryman,

Thanks for the heads up. Three days this year? Last year the event was held on a Saturday and Sunday. There are a lot of big ranges on the camp, and I hope they get a good one for this year's event.

Friday is set-up with sighting rounds for the mortars if there is time left in the day.  This range is located northeast of town and Matt says that we will be able to go down range between relays to score or fix targets without the problems that we had with check fires and such on Range 8.

Will they have bleachers behind the firing line for spectators?

That is somethig that is sorely needed at Ft. Shenadoah, but understand why it isn't done there.

No bleachers as far as I know.  We are going to be on a new range this year.  I believe you will be able to watch from an elevated position.  Bring your scope or binoculars.

Location of Camp Grayling?

I can think of nothing I'd rather do that meet The Fredericksons and see their mortars but don't know if I can make the Camp Grayling long range shoot? It's a long way from Virginia if I'm not mistaken? Where exactly is this shoot? Does anyone know if the Paulson Brothers come to this shoot as well?

Scott,
Camp Grayling is located in Northern Michigan, from what Matt Switlik has indicated to me is that the Paulson’s brothers and son are normally there competing.

I am planning to attend and will be traveling from Orlando, Florida, but by commercial air.

Grayling is about 230 miles north of Toledo on I-75.  Look it up on Map Quest to get a more accurate idea of the location.

Freddy,
I ran into you guys from the Litchfield Heavy Artillery Battery last year in New Ulm. Remember the HEAT? If I remember right, you guys won the mortars, my commander of the 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Battery, Marvin Roose & I won smoothbore, & the Paulson team won rifled. Lot of fun. Have you heard if this year's is on Labor Day as they talked about last year?

Joe

Dictator,

That's some fine shooting. What was the range of those targets?

Matt updated his site http://www.museumandcollector.com/grayling.html. He says:"The 2006 matches will be held at Range 35, much more convenient to downtown Grayling."

Thank John,
It was fairly close. It lasered at 187 yards from my muzzle. What was fun about this live fire was it was 10 shots, fired at will, in one hour timed, with no practice sight-in shots. It was over 100 degress that day with the same degree of humidity so the targets were hard to see with all the smoke from around 20 guns firing at willdown the line. You'd be loading and positioning the gun with firing on both sides of you seperated by just a few feet.  A literal blast

I thought there was supposed to be a powder can in the picture, for scale.

Is the range a close walking distance from the parking area?

WE have not been to this range before, but, it appears to be no more than 100yds from parking to the fireing line according to the map. Bring shade, it is suppose to be clear.( if you trust the weather guy's)
