index mark on forearm bolt?
« on: February 09, 2006, 09:07:35 PM »
Uh, I was cleaning my 44 barrel and I noticed a triangular point on the edge of the forearm bolt.  Coincidentally it points to muzzle when firmly tightened.  Does anyone else have this?  The bolt from my 223 barrel doesn't have it.  Can't remember the 308 having one either.  Not that it really matters, just curious.

actually that triangle does matter.   it's a reference point.    if you re-tighten the bolt to that location, without overtightening it and possibly flattening out the wood of the forearm, you will have a consistent torque on the screw which may help with holding your zero if you take the rifle apart removing the forearm.......

i mark the forearm with a notch using a knife to index the screw on my .223's.   they are consistently accurate and return to zero when re-assembled with ammo' that they like.

take care,

Yah, I use it for an index mark too.  I meant that it didn't really matter if you have one on your Handi because you could just scribe a mark if you wanted.  Just curious if I had an odd bolt or if this was an old feature.

bluebayou,

My stainless screw for my Huntsman has one, none of my other H&R/NEF guns have it though. I also use it as an index mark, tightening it to the same place every time.
