New Competition Cartridge
« on: February 10, 2006, 06:16:36 AM »
A shooter who doesn't shoot competion mentioned to me that there was a new cartridge which becoming very popular with 1000 yard bench rest shooters and said some custom gunsmith whose name I forgot but I think it was Matthews told him about it.  He said it was either a 270 or 7mm.  I thought I knew the newest ones here in the East but I haven't heard about any newer than the 6.5s and 6 mms which were making inroads into shooting at long distance. Could it be the new Gov. 6.8s? Or could it be a tactical round that is setting those class shooters on fire?

Dear Doc,
I saw your post and looked at some of the other competition forums to see if there was anything new. I didn't notice anything that jumped up as new. Seems like everyone is into their version of some 6.5mm like Tubb or Lapua, but those are not exactly new this season.

Did your friend mention anything about where he saw the new round?

Regards, Dino

He said he had heard about it from a custom gunsmith, a "Dave", who built tactical rifles.  I haven't seen him since then but said it was either a 7mm or a .270 cal. The only "Dave" I know in custom business in Dave Tooley and I know him personally and he is mostly in benchrest rifles.
Thanks for the reply. It has me buffaloed.  It could be that "Dave" is trying to boost a wildcat which he has come up with.
I don't believe there has been much revolutionary in benchrest 1000 yards shooting, cartridge-wise, but thought maybe the tactical boys had come up with something new.
