Forming 308 Win in to 300 Savage and had a case stick in the die and the ram pulled the shell holder off the casehead.  Now what? Heeelp.  Loading for 20 years and never had this happen before.

RCBS sells a "Stuck case remover".  I think I'd try to find one fast.  They are cheaper than buying a new die.

Congratulations for going 20 years without having this happen.

 I made my own stuck case remover. You need a tap (I use 1/4-28), a drill (#3)  in the correct size for the tap, a plain old bolt (about 1-3/4" long), 1/2" drive socket ( I use 19/32), and a fender washer.

Remove the die from the press, drill a hole through the primer pocket, tap the hole, cover with the socket and washer, insert the bolt and screw it in until the case pops loose. It is helpful to put the die in a vise to do this.

Or buy the RCBS stuck case remover.

I brought the drill index to the vise and drilled progressivly bigger holes through the case until it was very thin and then used an easy out to remove case.

I do the same thing as davem270win but I have rockchuckers and I screw the die with the stuck case into the bottom side facing up and I screw the bolt and fender washers from the top and use the width of the press as the resisting surface and tighten the bolt and it pulls free.  JB

I have the RCBS stuck case remover haven't used it in about 15 years and the times I did was just to see how it works. they are worth every penny if not just for the insurance of having it.
Just some advice. remove the decaping stem all the way if you can get it out, this way way you will not damage it when drilling into the case head.

If you have the older lee dies  you can use the decaping stem as the stuck case remover. just loosen the locking nut and use a rubber hammer to beat it out.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  The dies are RCBS and the lube is RCBS-2
water soluble.  I cannot blame the lube or the die as I had previously "rough sized" the brass and thought it would be good to resize it after all the work done to it just to make sure it would chamber.  Well it felt like it had enough lube on it so to save time I'll just run 'er thru.  The first two cases went in and out ok.  Not so for #3.

If you don't want to do it yourself most die makers will remove it if you send it back to them. I don't know how much they will charge so you might want to call them and see. :D

if you go to the websight for LEE reloading equipment they have a video showing how to remove a stuck case from a die.  I dont know if rcbs dies work the same but I sure wish I would have watched the video before I used my own way of removing a stuck case.
