26 or 36?
« on: February 11, 2006, 07:35:56 AM »
I am about to buy my first Glock.  I have been a 19 11 man for over 40 years but after shooting my CCW instructor's 26 I was pretty impressed and the size is a real plus for CCW carry.

26 pros:
Ammunition cheaper and more available.
More accessories.
Less recoil (although I have a AMT 45 Backup that the recoil isn't that bad on)
More ammunition capacity
Cons:
Little bulkier and harder to conceal
Ammunition isn't as powerful

36 Pros:
Slimmer, easier to conceal
Ammunition is a better stopper
Cons:
More recoil
less options as far as holsters and magazine pouches.  I have found very few holsters listed for the 36 in various catalogs.
Ammunition more expensive.

What do you think?

 I went with 36. Recoil is no problem. Uncle Mike has a clip holster that fits inside the pants or pocket. White box ammo can be found on sale around here for $10-12 a box. Nice carry piece.

I also have a 36, so far its been a great little gun. The recoil isnt any worse than a commander size 1911, and for me it conceals better then anything else I have.
The # of rounds it holds could be an issue, but thats the price you pay for a very concealable 45. I carry 7 in the gun and 2 spare mags. For me that should be plenty.
As for holsters and accessories, I have found that a lot of stuff that fits a G19 will also fit the 36 like a glove, specially if its made of leather, but fit test it first if you can. Hope this helps.

Most holsters that aren't kydex, which are made for the 19, should fit the 36 close enough.

If you're into modifying your guns, and you get a 36, you can round off the triggerguard and then it should fit pretty much most of the 1911 holsters (leather) out there.

BTW, if forgot to say that I really like my 36.  It shoots "softer" than my full sized 1991A1, and the round count isn't that much of a deal.  If one considers the compact 1911's out there, it isn't any different in the capacity.

I carry a G-19 and have also owned the G-27 (same size as the G-26)  I wouldn't feel under-gunned with the G-26 one bit, BUT having a choice between a 45 ACP or the 9mm makes a guy really ponder.... and ponder some more.

I'm in the market for a .45 ACP and the G-36 fits that bill in a very nice package.  And with the following pic you can see the G-36 delivers great groups.  Here is also a great artical (picture stolen from this link Shooting Times

Montanan,
Having owned both the 19 and the 36, to me they are about the perfect size for a concealed belt gun. I let my 19 get away from me, but someday I'll own another one. Meanwhile, my holsters for the 19 fit the 36 like a glove. If you decide on the 36, it's just a bonus as you already have the leather/kydex for the 19! Love my 36!!

I'm looking forward to getting the G-36 and hopefully very soon.... it's not that I need it, as much as want it.

There is only one other handgun company that makes what I might be interested in because of the thinness of what they make... their quality is bar none as well.  But we won't discuss that brand here.

Montanan,
As much as I like the 36, the thinnest of the .45 carry guns, and my favorite is the Kimber Ultra Carry! It's ok to like Glocks and 1911s!!

:cb2: Given your two options, I think the 36 is the clear winner. I don't have one yet, but my next automatic will be the 36. Love that .45 ACP!
