Which Ruger?
« on: February 11, 2006, 08:27:16 AM »
All right, I've decided its time for a new revolver but am having tdrouble decideing which one.  My choices are the Ruger blackhawk and GP100.  I will be using the gun for home defense, hunting backup, and general plinking.  I am set on a barrel of 6" but don't know which one I want more.  Always been a fan of the old west movies so I really want a single action but the double action allows faster reloads.  Any advise or information is greatly appereciated.  Thanks.

gsxrcurt,

in your list of uses for your new revolver you did not list the one reason that the BlackHawk would be a better choice than the GP100; quick draw!
The GP100 can and will do everything you mentioned BETTER than the single action. Unless the ability to draw your gun from a holster while cocking it is real important stick with the double action.

I got my GP100 with a 4" barrel in 357 Mag that gun is real accurate.

I have my Blackhawk in colt 45 with 7.5" barrel. I shot a three shot group at 100 yds with it 1.5"

Both are excellent guns. :D

Get the one you like or you'll be nagged by that decision. I personally prefer the double-actions because the're more user friendly ad have better ergonomics. But if you like the SAs, that's what you ought to get.  The difference in reload time isn't that great if you're using the gun for hunting and target shooting that doesn't involve rapid fire and rapid reloading techniques.

Ruger single actions are great for hunting and cowboy action shooting.
For personal defense, why not a S&W .357 magnum with a 4" barrel?
That is what cops carried, before they all switched to Glocks in .40 S&W.
(OK...I said "all" for dramatic effect.)

Unless you're a huge SA fan, I'd go with the GP-100 for the versatility. For self defense the DA capability, and rapid reloading are real pluses. It still makes a good plinker than can be enjoyed in SA or DA mode. I think you might like the GP-100 better in a 4" version tho-------it balances much better than the 6" for most folks. How about a 4" in the GP AND a 6" BH? Best of both worlds!! You will be well served by either one, go with what you want the most, who knows, you may someday end up with both!
