Came across a 38-55 Marlin Cowboy about a week ago at a gun shop. Went back to look at it today and brought it home. It's in like new condition, almost no blueing wear at lever pivot, has a Lyman globe front sight, the rear dovetail filled, and a Marbles tang sight. $460  The action is also much smoother than my 1895 45-70 Cowboy. Did Marlin smooth these actions at all?

My guess would be no Marlin actions are on the rough side. I would bet the previous owner slicked it up. It's not that hard to do as the Marlins are rather simple to work on if you are handy at all.

Nice caliber to get your hands on. I would like one like that too.

I own 5 marlins and have handled many others and my 45-70 Cowboy is definately the roughest action I've come across. I always like to shoot them alittle bit before doing anything to smooth them up. The 38-55 Cowboy is very smooth and shows no evidence of having been worked on. The blueing at the lever pivot doesn't show that its been cycled hardly at all. The bolt doesn't appear to have been hardly cycled. My new 45-70 shows more use than the 38-55.
