WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a 78-year-old man while hunting for quail on a ranch in Texas, U.S. television networks reported on Sunday. Cheney's hunting companion, Harry Whittington, was "alert and doing fine" in the hospital after being shot on Saturday with shotgun pellets, CNN reported ranch owner Katharine Armstrong said. Armstrong, the owner of the ranch where the weekend hunt took place, said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial hospital, the network reported. CNN said Cheney spent time at the hospital on Sunday with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin

Many years ago I had a 336 go off in the Decompression area of the house, boots, coat area and I pulled the trigger on a loaded gun, there was silence from the kitchen then a pop of a champaine bottle and a lot of cheering from
Dale but she was wrong,it went through two walls and ended up in a spare room curtain to be found years later.

President Ford dinged someone with a golf ball once. It happens. We lost a hunter up here last year as he stood up into the fireingline of a guides .338. He never knew what hit him.

This should be a wakeup call to all of us. Accidents do happen. Most are stupid mistakes, but things happen quickly and there is no room for error when guns are involved. I knew a guy who was with some guys tossing cans in the air and shooting them. He stepped in front of the shooter just as he pulled the trigger, head shot at 8-10ft. No matter  how experienced we are we should NEVER get too comfortable with our shooting habits, or gun handling, we have to always be aware of the consequences of just one mistake. I'm sure mr Chaney feels like crap, I know I would. POWDERMAN.  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(

That may be true Greg and I am sure you taught your boys well but every year there are hunting accidents in this country sad but a fact. Out of those hunting accidents many were folks that know gun safety or have passed hunter safety. Now since blaze orange has been put into use for high visability clothing and Hunter safety has been in effect the number of accidents are down which is good, but they still do happen.

Growing up I had two friends killed in hunting accidents. In the same years I had five killed in road accidents.
None of this is funny and I remember all of them fondly but the corelations are the same, it is a dangerous life we live, there are no guarentees, it rains on the just and the unjust, and the best one can do is to be as safe as possible---even then, well, even then.

I don't buy into the "accidents do happen" line.  This "accident" was caused by human behavior that was not properly channeled.  Improper gunhandling causes lots of "accidents".  Locally a deputy sheriff was shot in the leg at the police gun range by another officer mishandling a .308 caliber rifle.  The local media called it an "accident" but anybody with a lick of sense knows that a gun was not handled properly.  Making limp excuses does not reduce the problem, accountability does.

Exactly! Sounds to me like the VP forgot one of the top three rules of gun safety. Know your target and what's beyond.... If you follow this rule along with the other two cardinal rules - 1) treat every gun as if it were loaded and 2)keep the muzzle pointed in safe direction, you may have an accident (or an accidental discharge as has happened to me) BUT...... nobody will get hurt or killed

Easy for you guys to be judgemental but now many of you deer hunt  ( Or elk or antelope ect ect ect) and shoot either on a drive as a driver or a stander not knowing where your bullet will wind up if you miss the deer just that it is going into some trees or in a open area that nothing will stop it? Just because you cannot see any blaze orange in your field of vision does not mean that that bullet may travel somewhere else from where you intended it it could ricochete (SP)? and go in a different direction. I have hunted for too many years that I have not seen guys shooting where they thought they were safe and there was maybe over a hill a house or barn or roadway ect ect ect. Unless your bullet hits the animal you shoot at and stays in the animal chances are you have no darn idea exactly where your bullet is going to wind up at. Now I realize that a shotgun is a close up matter and you should be able to see line of sight but for arguements sake all you guys that are preaching about gun safety has made a shot that you had no idea where the bullet would wind up. If you say you have not  and do any kind of rifle hunting at all then  I will call you a liar.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
