Repair to ejector rod housing?
« on: February 14, 2006, 02:00:44 PM »
I was curious if anyone here has had any repair done to a FA revolver before? When I first bought my Model 83 about two years ago I was tightening the screw that holds on the ejector rod housing and the screwdriver damaged some of the metal around the screw hole, anyways it has bothered me ever since. I was wondering if anyone knows if FA can repair something like this? Can I just send in the ejector rod housing? Or do I have to send the whole gun? This is the only messed up spot on an otherwise perfect revolver, and it bugs me.

Give FA a call and see what they say. I sent a gun back to have an action job done and the firing pin replace. My gun was returned in about a week from the day I shipped the gun.

If the housing is simply scratched I would take the scratch out with some fine sand paper and re-buff with a scotch-brite pad if the gun has the premier grade finish. If the metal was pulled I’d take it down gently with a safety file and refinish.

If the hole is all messed up I would order a new housing and put it on myself. If you feel you will scratch up the new one then pay a smith make the swap. It takes longer to find a screwdriver that fits well than it does to change out the ejector housing.

Or you could send your gun off or just the housing and wait. Either way, give ‘em a call.

Take Care,
Scott

The screwdriver I used was a tad too wide, when I turned the screwdriver it bit a small piece of steel out of the side of the screw hole. The steel that was disturbed is sticking up and there is now a hole where it was, hard to describe. I've tried using the maroon scotchbrite pad to blend it in, but to no avail, I can't stop noticing it now. How do you remove the ejector rod housing? By the way, yes it is a Premier.

Shipping handguns has become very expensive, the last one I shipped was $55. I think you could just get a new housing, but it would be wise to talk to F.A. first.

I called FA this morning and talked to the gun smith, he told me that I could just send in the ejector housing and he'd take a look at it. He mentioned that if the housing could not be repaired that a new one would run about $65 or so, along with another $40 to fit it to the gun. I removed the housing (not that difficult it turns out), and tried some more scotchbrite pad, it needs something more to completely fix it. So I guess I'll just have either live with it or send it in. The scratch is only about 1mm long, but it actually raised metal, I imagine most people probably would not even care. Maybe I'll post a picture of it and get some opinions on which route to take.

Those prices are outrageous to me. I would takes a fine file or stone and slowly work the ding down, then finish w/ appropriate grit of emory cloth and live with the result.

Yes, nuts! You are looking at somewhere around $150 with shipping cost. I think I'd fix it myself, live with it, or take it to a local gunsmith.

I agree, I think I've decided to live with it the way it is. It is really not that bad, I'm just anal retentive when it comes to my guns.
