Need scope mounting advice
« on: February 14, 2006, 06:38:06 PM »
Have a model 83 in 454C & want to mount a scope on it. I know squat about doing this. Have only found two mounts, Freedom Arms ( mighty pricey ) and Leupold ( suspiciously inexpensive ). Perhaps there are others that can be suggested. I don't want to spend more than necessary. But don't want to underspend & be sorry with the results.

Asking for some guideance from those that have done it & happy with their results.

Thanks,

A word of advice, don't go cheap, you get what you pay for in this department. The 454 Casull is rough on scope & mount. My FA wore a TSOB mount.   :D

The three-ring TSOB is the most secure system offered for the FA. A lot of folks, including FA, would recommend the three ring TSOB set up for the higher pressure guns like the 454.

If my plan was to shoot heavy loads most of the time I would go with the TSOB. If my plan was to shoot modest loads and shoot the heavy stuff every now and then, I would go with the Leupold set up and mount the scope forward till the front of the adjustment section of the scope met up with the front ring. Leupold says their scopes can be mounted in this fashion without damage. Many 454 FA owners use the Leupold set up in this way.

FA also offers a hip holster, scope exposed, for the two ring set up. If I were to carry a scoped handgun in a holster this is the style I would prefer.

Take Care,
Scott

I have the Leupold base and rings.  It is very stout and I would not hesitate to use it on a heavy kicker.  I was actually kind of surprized at how solid it is considering the price.
