45/70 TC or Marlin
« on: February 15, 2006, 10:28:58 AM »
Hello, I have posted this question in two different places as I would like to know the differing opinions you may have.

I’m based in the UK and have just applied for a number of extra rifles on my “ticket”.

I want a 45/70 calibre rifle but have not yet made up my mind. My choice is for either the Thompson Center Encore “Katahdin” Carbine or the Marlin 1895 GS (stainless).

One of my criteria’s is for a short rifle that is easy to transport. I drive a sports car and when I take my varmint rifles to the range they have to travel in the passenger seat. I know both the Marlin and TC will go into my cars boot (trunk for you guys).

I do like the TC Encores and definitely will be ordering a TC Encore 209x50 muzzle loading pistol. If I go for the TC encore “Katahdin” rifle in 45/70, I would also add a rifle version of the 209x50 (20in) muzzle loading barrel as well.

I’m keen on the TC system, but do like the Marlin Guide Gun. I have also asked for a lever action 357/38 rifle so there will be at least one Marlin in my gun safe sharing space with my bolt actions later this year. I know there is more choice in (pointed) bullets for the single shot Encore, but it looks as though Hornady are addressing the situation for the Lever action rifles.

I’m not looking to stir up any trouble amongst the different camps. I’d just like to hear any pros & cons that people may like to share.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

It's a toss up. I have both, a 45/70 Encore and a 450marlin guide gun. Loaded hot they will both stomp the crap out of you. KN

I prefer the Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 over the TC encore “Katahdin” rifle in 45/70. I am a TC nut but the Marlins are nice.  :D

I agree they are both excellent guns and if loaded heavy they both will hammer you. Good luck Duke45

Get the Marlin.  You can always get another barrel for the TC (maybe not sure of your laws) but the Marlin levers are great rifles and reliable.

I have both the Marlin and TC in 45/70 and love both.  One thing to think about though.  On my TC I put a 22" custom shop heavy barrel and it is the same length as my 1895G 18 1/2".  I use the same load in each and carry the Marlin when I want more than one shot at the ready (heavy woods) and the T/C when I want more punch and distance (broken and open countryside)

I forgot to add that you can use different bullet in each.  The Marlin I use the most blunt and biggest hollowpoints I can find where with the T/C I use some semi-pointed bullets that seem to carry a little better.

Thanks for all your help.

I put in an order for a stainless 1895 Guide Gun last Saturday. It should be here sometime in April.

I still plan to go for a TC Encore 209x50 muzzle loading pistol. Here in the UK we are limited as to what handguns we can legally own. Muzzle loaders are OK and so are long-barrelled-revolvers with fixed arm brace (24” overall length).

I know that the TC Encore frame will take different stocks/grips/forends & barrels, so I could build a rifle from a pistol, but I doubt that my local police authority would be happy with that…..
