Mountain man survival skills video?
« on: February 17, 2006, 10:40:24 AM »
I know that there is a lot of information on wilderness skills and the like on  VHS and DVD such as Hood's Woods, Buckshot's, etc. I was wondering if anyone has produced a video or DVD on what one could call mountain man survival skills. Someone in period dress and accoutriments living out in the wild as if it were 1825?

I did some searches but came up with nothing. Anyone have any info on this subject? Thanks.

I guess it might be a little late now... but the boy scouts were a good source of info for me years ago    ;D

Experience is about the best way to make things work.  I have always lived out where I knew the land, and needed to know it, but the thing is whatever I learned, I always had to adapt it.  There are always different rules for different people.

Such as...  in alaska in the winter the "cotton kills" rule.  I still wear cotton socks under my wool sock, because wool or synthetics make my feet sweat too much, making them wet and cold.  Find some seculded place, take less stuff than you need, and go out for a couple of days.  Two or three days, as long as you dont get lost, without all you need isnt going to kill you, but it is going to tell you what you want and need to have with you.

Also, the "mountain man" skills can be fairly area specific.  A lot of those videos show things such as broken off lower large branches of spruce and such being used to make a lean-to.  What if in your area it is only tall new growth trees, so no such resources are available to make a shelter?  Once agian, you just have to get out and find what is around you, and adapt to your environment.

1st off, glad to meet all of you!  The main rule of survival is adaptation!  You have to adapt to your surroundings and make do with what is provided for your tools and supplies.

enjoy the forum and found lots of useful info already.

We  used to call "Mountain Man Skills"    Woodcraft skills ,these encompassed fire building, tracking, shelter making, trapping, survival in outdoor conditions.
Hunting and fishing as well. I've been interested in these skills all my life and I am 76 now. There are many excellent books on the subject. One of the best is a book titled "Bushcraft" by Richard Graves. Printed by Schocken Books in New York. It is inexpensive and very very good. It delves into the subject in great depth.
