Rem. 742 Woodsmaster Carbine??
« on: February 18, 2006, 04:08:59 AM »
I just came from a garage sale where the guy had a Remington 742 Carbine Woodsmaster in 30-06, with scope & 2 extra magazines.
All for 150.00  Wood & metal look great.
I did not buy it because I have heard this gun referred to as the "Jam Master" so many times, and that was all I could think about as I looked at it. Just around the corner from my house. Should I go back or leave it???

Hell man, even if it is a Jam Master, that's a killer deal! You can't buy some scopes for under $150! Go back and buy it, and if it does turn out to be a Jam Master, take it to your local gun shop and have him buy it from you so then it can be his problem ... :D

JP,

Again, it is a 30-06. The crown looks perfect.  Man who sold it has now about 30 guns, and did not shoot it anymore. Amazing how clean & well kept this gun is. The reciever inside looks great.
I have seen many a 742 in pawn/gun shops over the years that were trashed. Looking forward to reporting back today after my trip to the range.

I can't find a name brand on the scope anywhere. Only the the word "Boresighter" on the 50MM bell.
This gun is for my 15 yr old son who has been asking me for a Rem. in 30-06. He did a Biography report a few years ago in school on the history of Remington. Since then, he has an affinity for the older Rems. He restored an old Rem. 58 Sportsman shotgun that is now beautiful and is his bird go-to gun. His PaPa have him an old Rem. 514 22 bolt action. Very accurate with iron sights. So now, he is tickled to have the 742 to add to his collection.

Oops, I didn't see the 30-06 in your first post.

I'm glad that your son is tickled to have this gun. I can remember my first Remington...wow...how long ago that was

Good luck with the gun! :D

Back from Range. The 742 shot great. Very little recoil. At 50 & 100 yards, we were very pleased with the groups. We did not tweek it because we are going to put better rings & I will donate a Leupold 3-9X scope from another gun to this one. I also found a Winchester 94 in 30-30 a few days ago, so I took it along to see how it shot. Fairly accurate with iron sights. It was a good day at the range (despite our straight faces  :) ), and shooting with your son makes it even better. The family that shoots together stays together.

Nice gun, great deal. Why do I never find deals like that???????????  My grandfather had a 30-06 pump like that , and he killed  many deer with it in  Michigan.

What difference does it make if it Jams up after the first shot?   You should be done hunting after pulling the trigger once.

I'd be more concerned if it had one of those Safety's that were prone to allow the gun to go off in the 'ON' position.   Also, it may be an optical illusion from the angle the picture was taken, but it looks like the scope is higher in the back than it is in the front.  That could cause problems.

You have a nice rifle at a good price.

I have found my 742 30-06 performs flawlessly if the chamber is kept clean and I use Federal ammo.

I'm glad for you, Ditto going out shooting with family. The thing with semis is sometimes you gotta find ammo it likes. If a 742 doesnt work, my friends returned theirs to Remington  and got credit towards 7400s. My 7400 never jammed.
