new guy with questions.

Hi guys. just found this place. got to say I like the site alot. Well now for the hard part. I haven't trapped in 20 years and I don't currently own any traps. But it has always been something i have wanted to get back into. I live in northern illinois and just found out I can trap beavers till march 31st. So here are the questions. Are the beaver hides worth anything this late in the season? I would be trapping in a flooded creek area that the beavers are working heavily. I am restricted to water sets due to the landowners dog being free to roam so what are the high percentage spots to look for? I would also like any info on what books, magizines to read up on asI hope to trap all season next yr at the same spot. What size conibear traps do I get for beavers? What works beast for stakes beaver sets? Do alot of you trap this late into the season?  I am really looking forward to trying this. It will give me a great excuse to get back in the woods. I really miss bow season already.  Thanks alot for reading my short book of questions and any help you might offer. take care. dcl

I have trapped beaver in wyo until april.as for traps the conibears I use 280 's and 330's but I prefer the 330. check your laws about snares with deer stops.you can catch beaver and not hurt the dogs and alot easyer and cheaper. :D

i never under stood why people take beaver in spring, if ya take um in fall the the male beaver just mate again, but in spring you lose about 3 beaver when u take one, since the female is gone.

This would appear to be a bad thing, but if you think about it there is no difference.  If you remove an animal in the spring or fall they are no longer in the population to reproduce...gone is gone.

The season lengths and limits, if applicable, are set to permit a sustainable harvest over a long period of time.  By monitoring harvest trends it is possible to identify problem areas.  If you have good population data and harvest data you can better establish / document sustainable use.  Long term harvest trends are often the best data that is available and rarely is it that we have excellent population data.

Spring harvests, when allowed, provide extended recreational use and harvest of prime pelts that otherwise would not be available.  This is done when the data indicates such harvests do not negatively impact on thepopulations.
