Got a peep and firesights on my .45-70 Handi, works great!! My older eyes don't work well with barrel sights, but a peep is fine.

Hey Quick, cool forend. Can you get that from NEF or is it custom?

I do. Even though my eyes are starting to tire quicker, I still think it is necessary to have something with iron sights. Scopes are great, but it just ain't natural to not have at least one rifle with irons!

357mag Topper with Mannlicher forend, factory iron sights: (for sale in classifieds http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=86501)

And 357 Max factory laminated straight stocks, rear aperture sight (I didn't have the factory sights off - forward on the barrel - for this pic):

I use the factory open sights on my 45-70 Handi.  Scopes take too long to aquire target in the dense pine thickets I hunt deer in.

I have a Smith Enterprises ladder/buck horn rear sight on my BC for howitzer style groundhog hunting.  I notched it for (approx) 255gr slugs @ 2300fps MV graduating out to 500yard trajectory.  ...a friend has a digital record now, I will be supplying video clips this summer of GH hunting with a BC.

I checked out a BC at Gander once.  I immediatly got on Target(a Display)  with that Peeper.  Presently, I only have a slug barrel with irons, but when I am able to ge hold of a 357 its gonna get a Peeper on it.  I also have thought I would like to have a Red Dot.  Like so many of us, the ole' eyes just ain't what they used to be.

Do you use the factory globe sight on the front? I am thinking about installing the Smith ladder on my BC but am not sure of which front to use.
I use open or peep sights on most of my rifles. My eyes ain't the youngest anymore but I find that for hunting in the eastern hardwoods peep sights are buy far the fastest way to get on target. Red dots are fast but I do not trust batteries.

I'm using the factory front.  The Smith Enterprise rear has plenty of elevation when you flip it up for long distance.

You may have to change an insert in the front to work with the new rears though..

Personally I like Iron sights over scope in short distances. I started shooting an old broken sighted 22, 50 years ago.

Putting new sights on your Handi is easier than you think!!

The Smith Ent ladder sight is available from Buffalo Arms...

Thanks quick! Why in the world are those sites (and types like it) so stinkin expensive? There is nothing to them! If I had a milling machine, I would make one myself. Might not be as pretty, but I bet it would work.

I'm guessing a combination of supply/demand and cost of manufacturing.  They probably dont make many of them at a time because of so little people buying them, so supply is low.    On the manufacturing aspect, they are a very nice unit.   ...very well crafted and fit like a glove(not OJ Simpson's glove).

Here's a good thread with lots of sight options...

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=74620&highlight=smith

The Smith Ent web site appears to be dead, the only Smith sights that I can find are for military firearms...I'm wondering if they still make the ladder sight???

If you do a Yahoo search for  "Smith Enterprise buckhorn", there will be a link listed to the sales page along with the product pages.

I think their online sales and shopping basket plug-ins are broke.  Which happens..

I know Brownells and Buffalo Arms still have them in stock if anyone is interested.  ..a little pricey, but worth it in my opinion.

Bernie(Dodd3) piqued my interest in the Smith sight when a friend of his with eyesight as bad as mine was able to use it, so I've been thinking real hard on getting it, even at that cost, if it works, I'd be happy.....I suppose they don't make it any more with my luck, now that I want one!! I emailed Smith to see if they still make it.

Wow.  I just checked last week at Brownell's for a friend that is considering one..   I hope Buffalo Arms has a ready supply for future purchases.

My eyes aren't the greatest either.   With blood sugar problems, vision gets fuzzy when sugar drops out.  I'm still able to groundhig hunt with the Smiths out to some really long ranges, with aid of a spotting scope..  Once I aquire target with the scope, its easy to find them in the ladder sight.

Once of these days I get out to the farm to take pics of the BC.

I use the top right insert for whistle pigs.

Yote223, I have a 22 hornet with the open sites.  I get 4-5" groups at 100y which Im not complaining about since it is really too cold here in Maine to spend too much time at the range.  I had the stock irons on my 30-30, but I just bought one of the Williams Peeps from Midway.  I rocks!...but I am still keeping the Hornet with the stock sites.
