I know I've been to these boards before - just forgot about 'em for a while until a buddy from the NoslerReloading site reminded me.

Introduction of sorts: Don't ask about my name. It's a long story. Been reloading for a coupla years now and have experience mostly with handgun reloads. Done some rifle - including .243 Win and 300 Weatherby and now, my beloved 45-70.

I have purchased some 300 and 350 grain bullets and have put together some good recipes, but would also like to know good results YOU'VE had with these size of bullets. I am using H4198 for now, but I'm willing to try other powders.

For 300 and 350 grain bullets probably don't have to look much further than H4198.

Marlin 1895 45-70 22" barrel
300 grain Speer UniCor hollow point seated to 2.53" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
52 grains H4198 START LOAD
55 grains H4198 HUNTING LOAD 2175 fps
1.1" five-shot 100-yard groups

Marlin 1895 45-70 22" barrel
350 grain Hornady FN seated to 2.54" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Winchester brass, 2.1" trim
CCI 200 primer
47 grains H4198 START LOAD
54 grains H4198 MAXIMUM LOAD 2150 fps
1.8" five-shot 100-yard groups

I LOVE Reloader 7 in my 1895GS! I am pretty sure my load of choice is 43.7gr. of R7 with a 300gr Sierra JHP. This load is just over trapdoor loads and actually below the starting loads for the 1895gs. This is an absolute powderpuff, but prints under an inch(if I am shooting well) and is more than enough to drop a buck in his tracks.

I use 50.0 Reloader 7, 300gr Rem hp bullets, Remington brass, and CCI200 primers and get right at 2000fps. This load knocks deer flat and is VERY accurate for me. I have been wanting to try H4198 as they list higher velocity, but haven't as yet.

I've tried all sorts of powders in the 45-70 but finally settled on the Hodgdon Extreme series - good stuff. I presently use H4198 to push my 405gr bullets to right at 1800fps out of my Guide Gun. It's my one-holer load.

However, you can get enough H4198 in a case to be dangerous, whereas you can't get enough H4895 in a case to get in trouble. For high-performance loads I think H4198 is the fastest and H4895 the slowest to use.

Unfirtunately, I had a problem with the very first round I chambered. Had to take the thing apart to get the cartridge out of the extractor.

Won't be able to try the reloads for a few weeks until Marlin is done working on it.

As far as I can tell, it a problem with one of the following things: the extractor claw, the ejector pin, or the bolt face. The cartridge actually loads into the chamber fine but will not eject. Lever comes back to the point that most of the cartridge is free of the chamber, but then hits a hard metallic 'clunk' the last 1/8th".

Anyhoo, I loaded the 350 grainers ( Hornady Interlocks) with 52 grains of H4198 and I have some barnes 300 grain XBullets that I will load with 55 grains.

Are you just loading some 350s at 52 grains of H4198? Or are you working up in increments from a starting load of 47 grains? Standard reloading practice dictates working up loads from published starting loads, or in the absence of those, 10% below a published maximum load.

The 300 grain Barnes XFN is about as long as a 400 grain cup and core bullet. Using load data for a 300 grain cup and core bullet with the 300 grain Barnes XFN suggests reducing the starting load by at least 5%. That would be about 52 grains.

Do not exceed 2.55" overall length. The Marlin action will start jamming at around 2.65" or so. If you use the canelure on some bullets you'll end up with a 2.7" OAL which will jam.

Actually, EsoxLucius, I think I probably confused that with the 300 grainers. Not sure what I was thinking at the moment I typed that......just too worried about my gun getting back to me in one piece.

Anyhoo, yes, I ALWAYS start at the bottom of the load and work my way up. Sorry.

60 grs Varget and 350 gr HRN is what I am using in mine. Stout, but doable. Good luck! :grin:
