I run a Garmin 162 on my boat and it has "decent".  I have several friends who run the high end Garmin color GPS units, 2006-C and 2010-C.  The capabilities of these units, when coupled with the Garmin Map Source (Blue Chart) software, is simply unbeliveable.   The 2010-C runs around $2500 and the 2006-C is around $2000.  Both machines are produced in a grayscale version for considerably less.  The Map Source CD is about $125.  I got my 162 for about $350.

I use the handheld units with maps , also hook them up to my laptop using Mapsource . IMHO the maps are very clear and seam to be very accurate compared to some others we have played with. I currently use a Garmin etrex legend  and a Garmin ique 3600 pds with gps , I use both on land and water and have been very pleased with them . If your using it for the boat only , grouper has given you some solid advice on units.
