H&R BC?
« on: February 20, 2006, 08:46:31 AM »
How does the buff classic stand up to the other BPCR riffles. I am saving up for one and the accesories to go with i.e dies, brass, boolits, sights, and Goex. Been reading here for awhile and would like yalls inputs on what things I should do/need to make this a good fun rifle.

SS, you can't use the BC for BPCR matches. Some cowboy action side matches and Quigley, but that's about it.

Aside that from that, they are well made for a H&R, mine is very accurate and a hoot to shoot.

Thanks Ed I have no interest in actual BPCR I just like BP even more so in a rifle. I would use it mainly for hunting and long range plinking in the desert and maybe the ocasionel SASS shoot. How is the recoil? I read on H&R's sight that these are about 8# rifles, Most of the other big boomers are 10-14# i.e the sharps and rolling blocks. Is the weight an issue with BP loads and recoil?

I don't have a problem with recoil, but some folks are more sensitive. A full load with a 500grn bullet will thump you pretty good. Go up to the H&R centerfire forum and look around. Some folks add shot or lead weights to the butt stock ( just fill the hole up) and notice an improvement. I use a shoulder pad when shooting anything over 1500fps.

Note that some Buffs like large (.459-.460) soft 20-1 bullets, mine seems to like .459 hard cast.

I keep 2 sets of cartridges, one for BP and one for smokeless. I usually fire light loads (100fps) with 405grn lazer cast and unique or xmp5744 for targets, can shoot all day without getting sore.

I use Goex FFP for the bp, about 66grns with a drop tube. Lots of fun, lots of smoke.

Geez Ed, those 100fps loads must make powder last a looooong time......targets too....and you could probably shoot the bullets over again if you can find em laying somewhere short of the 100yd line!!!! :-D  :-D  :-D  :D

SS,
The factory sights wont get it done on these guns. You'll probably end up changing the back sight, or putting on a lower front sight, unless H&R has finally figured out the sights aren't right, and added a higher rear sight!
Mine shot 6" low at 100 yds, with the adj. all the way up.
I found the weight to be a tad too light, but I fixed that by removing the buttplate, and filling the hole in the stock with #8 bird shot. Then replace the buttplate with the shot slightly heaped, and it will keep it compressed a bit. That added about 16 oz. to the weight, and made a nice difference.

Marlinman93, mine was the same way, but I swapped out the front .584" 17A sight for a .404" and put the Williams FP Target rear sight on it. It's also rechambered to .45-120. With the rear sight all the way at the bottom, it hits anywhere from point of aim at 100yds with 460gr CP to 1½" high or so with 405gr rems and CP WFNGC. I also have a lead filled pipe for the bolt hole and a Galco recoil pad.....plus a Past Magnum  siss....er.....shoulder pad!!

Quick, I get my best groups at 100fps. I was shooting 1100, but found at 100 I can scamper down ahead of the bullet, and adjust the target as necessary!!

Thanks!! I are in Vancouver!!  I shoot at Clark Rifles when they start opening on Wed and Fri in April, don't care for the weekend crowd if I can avoid it. Used to be an RO there, but the crowds got too serious and 1 RO for 3 ranges is a little too much to be responsible for, specially for an old retired guy!!!

Ogo, I can answer that for ya if you don't mind. I just ordered one from www.buffaloarms.com They're out of them right now, but I got an email direct from Smith Ent stating they still make it, so it's just a matter of them getting it in stock. Brownell's lists it, but they're out of stock also. I don't know how much Smith sells it direct for, give em an email or call and find out. They're $140 for Brownells and Buffalo Arms.

The H&R BC is a very fun and accurate gun. I have shot one with black powder cartridges and the recoil was very manageable. I have been shooting black powder cartridges for about 6 years now in my Shiloh Sharps. I noticed with black powder loads the recoil is more of a push that a sharp recoil associated with smokeless powder. I load 500 to 535 gr. cast bullets and 510 to 550 gr. cast bullets with paper patch. It is a blast shooting black powder cartridges.  :D

Here's a pic of the actual Sight...

http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4,4191.htm

I called Buffalo Arms today, they have 15 of the sights on order, but if I were ordering one now, I'd get it direct from Smith!!
