sights for a 30AS?
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:07:43 AM »
All the sights from Williams, Hi-Viz, Marbles are listed to fit 336's with ramped front sights.  Mine are dovetailed so I am looking for some that will work.  Anyone with any info will be appreciated!  Thanks!

The sights listed should just be screwed into place, totally replacing the factory Marlin front sights.

You would have to first remove the screws from the front sight, remove the sight, and then inverse the order of removal for the new sights.

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

You are talking about front sights, right?  I assume that when you say your sights are dovetailed, you mean that the dovetail is cut in the barrel.  The ramps are also dovetailed for the sights, just the ramp screws to the barrel so it raises the front sight.  The sight itself goes into the dovetail on the ramp.  You need to measure your existing sight from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight, then find one of about the same height and it should slide right into place.  You might also want to look at Williams Shorty Ramp.  They have one which has a dovetailed piece which slides into the dovetail and the ramp is screwed into this adapter.

My Dad gave me his old 30AS a few years before he passed on, and I put a Williams Foolproof receiver sight on it last fall.  This rifle has a dovetail cut into the barrel, and to boot, the barrel band is very close to the dovetail.  I tried a few different front sights from Williams and Marbles with no luck.  They were not high enough to bring my point of impact  down to the point of aim even with the rear sight adjusted as low as it would go.

After tons of searching, the solution was a front sight from XS Sights.  It is a very nicely made white line post that is the perfect height.  It is not on their website, or in their catalog.  I called them and told them what I was looking for and the guy said it was for a Winchester lever action.  I explained the situation about the barrel band, etc. and he said no problem.  If I recall, it was about $35 or so

Got it in a few days, installed it and went to the range.  Works perfectly!

If you like I could fine the package and give you the part number, etc., or post a picture

Yes, any information on those sights would be appreciated, especially a pic and link to the company that sold it.

I just picked up a 30AS and it came with a 4x Tasco scope but I'm fond of peep sights.  I'd light to know more about the XS solution that worked for you.

Dave,

I have the XS combination on a Ruger Compact and love it.

Points to ponder:
1-Use the largest aperture available. For field use there's no appreciable difference in accuracy. (Mine is .190, which is OK.)

2-Make sure to get a front post that is wide enough. Mine is .100. It is a click out of focus with my eyesigth (no glasses, 70 yrs old next month.)I've looked through a .125 width sight and that was in sharp focus. You won't gain much accuracy with a thinner front post, and the wider post makes sight acquistion much faster.

My $.02
