Bulk Ammo
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:05:18 PM »
I've started buying bulk ammo  now because I shoot a great deal more 22 than I have in years. I have come full circle in my shooting I started out with 22's when I was a kid and drifted into centerfires and muzzle loading but I find myself back shooting my 22's alot lately.
I know some guns prefer some ammo over others.........But what do you guys find to be the most consistent bulk ammo?   Thanks, Jim

The Winchester Dynapoints have been a very accurate ammo for me in all my rimfires since I started using them in '98.
Good Shooting,

I like Federal too.  I like the automatch ammo for my new Ruger Mark III Hunter, shoots very tight.  For plinking, I like the big box of 550 hollowpoints.  All my guns shoot them well.

Federal Automatch for me. It comes in 325-count bulk pack boxes from Wal-Mart for around $10 or so. It shoots better for me than lots of the match ammo out there. Only Wolf Match Target or better outshoots it in my guns.

Sounds like the federals have it. Darn I bought another box of the Remingtons the day before I made the post. After they run out looks like I'll try the Federals. Thanks for the posts..........Jim

It kinda depends on your gun.
In my Marlin model 60 rifles it's Dynapoint.  That's mostly because they are prone to jam if they get too dirty.
A friend's Browning model 41 pistol will jam badly with Federal bulk ammo.  They don't extract all the way and the next round is jammed up against the last empty that's sticking half way out of the chamber.
My old Ruger Standard Auto pistol shoots every brand with no problems.
My Browning BL-22, Rossi 62 pump and Savage 6A rifles will shoot just about anything well.

Swampy,

22 rimfires rifles are so ammo specific it is well worth everyone's time to try a lot of different types cause you'll usually find 1 or 2 that your particular rifle really like.  Now, to me bulk 22 ammo isn't just the 500 or 550 packs - Its all 22 ammo less priced less than $1.50 per box of 50.  With that said here's three recommendations that I believe all should put on thier "TO TRY" list:

1)  PMC Zappers and PMC Scoremasters
2)  CCI Blazers
3)  Federal Champions

It really depends on your gun.  Go out and buy a 50 round box of each at your local gunshop and make a day of it.

Having said that I have found that Federal champions and AE work well and Dynapoints do pretty good to.  Dynapoint are becoming hard to find now.  I have a box of Federal auto match that I haven't tried yet.  The best "cheap" ammo I have found is mini mags, but they do cost more 4.50 - 5.00 per 100.

I have never had very good luck with Remington or Winchester ammo.

Dan,
Yeah I know what your saying. I have five rim fires at home and my goal is to find an ammo that shoots reasonably well in all.  If I had to buy a diferent brick of ammo for each gun I sure would have to lay in a big supply. Most of the guns do ok with the Rem. and I have a couple that don't like the Win all that much and two guns that will shoot anything. Thanks to all........Jim

My old Marlin 60 likes the Remy Bulk Pack stuff. Get quarter sized groups at 50yds. Used to shoot Remington years ago but didn't get good accuracy then I picked up this used 60 and it just loves the stuff, go figure. :D

Factory number 1622,they seem to really shoot consistent and really good for me.
A few years back I had a Marlin 60 that I was shooting with Winchester Wildcats,a shell fired with the bolt open somewhat I think, and cracked the top of the reciever.I wish I had called both companies on it.

Federal American Eagle 38gr. HPs are the best low cost ammo I've ever used. In my son's 10-22 heavy bbl(the only thing still Ruger is the bolt and action body) . Shot Eley 10X into .490 at 50 yds, and that's $10 a box. The Fed. Am Eagle's shot .505 at $0.85 per box(40).  I'll give up .015 to save $9 anyday. To get that price you must buy them by the case. I've used them in five different rifles and four handguns and in everycase they shot super.  If memory serves me I'm on my fifth case of them(4000 to the case).

When I get a new gun or bbl I always try 8-10 different brands of ammo to establish what they like then try the Am. Eagles. They haven't disapointed me yet. They shoot right along with the best of the rest.

I had one lot # of Dynapoints that shot super but other lots were just so-so. With that 10-22 described above that one lot of Dynapoints shot 10 shots into .498 @ 50 yds. Other lot #'s were .8 to 1.0.

Have had great luck with Wildcats in my 10/22, but they rarely work for me in my MKII. Other than that, Golden Bullets don't do horribly for me for the price. I mostly stick to Wildcats or Aguila Super Extra

Yankee, I've followed the same path myself. The last few years, I've really enjoyed .22's and shoot them a lot now. I use Federal Bulk mostly as it's the most reliable in my autoloaders. Winchester Xpert has shown itself to be very accurate, but it's not reliable in my guns. Remington Golden Bullet isn't bad either. The newest thing to hit locally is Federal bulk Automatch. That's the most accurate and consistant bulk ammo that I've found so far.

I haven't gotten around to all of them but the best has been Rem SubSonics.  I looked carefully at them for local feral cat problems and I needed something QUIET.  We live out were a lot of people think that kettens are always welcome.  Also surprisingly CCI Minimags and federal champions.  It shoots a lot of stuff pretty well Rem target or thunderbolts- maybe I am lucky. Winchester hasn't done so well

I've tried a lot of different brands but I get the best accuracy for the money from Eley sport.  Some are cheaper and some are more accurate but my Win. 69B will one hole the Eleys at 25 yards.  The next most accurate "cheap shells" are the Aguilla 40 gr. standard velocity.  For hunting the Federal Automatch hp works well in my semi autos.

I was recently given a pristine Mossberg 144 LSA target rifle. Tried Federal bulk from Wal Mart. Shot all over the place.  75 yard groups were around 3 to 4 inches. Switched to Dynapoint and T-22. Shrank down to an inch from an improvised rest.
Again, it depends on the particular rifle. There are no hard and fast recommendations possible, but Dynapoints seem to be the most consistently accurate ammo in most rifles.

Well I just finished up a bulk pack of the Federals.  I have three rifles and two pistols and they all shot equal to or in most cases better than the other bulk packs. My ruger Mk I isn't fussy and will shoot anything well, S&W 17 did beter with the Fed's My Henry did exceptionaly well with the Fed's,the Mosberg bolt did better too. my Rem. pump  didn't like anything.  I think it's time for a major military style cleaning [a total disasembly].
I'd like to thank everyone for their posts.
ps I bought another pack of the Fed's last night ......They have gone up $1.20 since the last time I bought them. It looks like all the ammo is going accross the board. Thanks again....Jim

I'm always amazed how one person's experience differs from another with this. My brother shoots 50 ft. pistol competition, and he swears by high-velocity CCI. When I was younger, I shot thousands of CCI hi-vel and Stingers, and the misfire rate was about 6%, with lots of variation in power (pop, pop, BANG, pop, foomp, pop). I shot it because it was cheap. I've always had "dimensional" problems with Federal ammo in just about every caliber, so I tend to stay away from it.

I've had the best luck with Remington. I've shot a whole heap of Remington Vipers, Yellowjackets, high-velocity, and target. I recall maybe one or two misfires. I mostly shoot Winchester, high-velocity when I'm plinking, and T-22 when I'm trying to hit targets. I typically get two bad rounds per 1000, and it is usually because the priming mix isn't all the way around the rim. My brother thinks the Remington is junk because he gets a lot of misfires, but we both agree the Winchester can be dirty. I can't figure it out, we both buy from the same stores... ???

He shoots a Ruger Mk2 or Colt Challenger. I shoot a Browning Buckmark, a Remington Speedmaster or a Marlin bolt gun. I do know that the Browning and the Marlin have heavy firing pin strikes. Maybe that's it?

I had the first fail to fire with Remmington green box target ammo a few days ago.  It had a good hard rim hit, I put it in again with the same results in another spot.  I shot bricks and bricks of this stuff and suppose I should have expected it, but at 17 bucks a brick I guess I expect perfection.
