Hi, can any of you fellas tell me where to start with H-4198 and a hornady 350 gn round nose bullet ? I have a speer #12 manuel, but have no information on this combination of bullet and powder for a 45-70 !! thanks

Lever Actions

We need to know what gun you are loading for. As noted above in part above, load data will be provided for three levels of pressure in most manuals. The data given above should not be used in guns requiring SAAMI pressure loads. I suggest you get on Hodgdon's or Hornady's website, buy their manuals or give them a call.

So, I'm guessing that the Marlin 1895 fits into the 'Lever Action' portion as listed above by reallybigfoot.

I've heard that the Ruger #1 has perhaps the strongest action and can handle the highest pressures. Is that true? What other guns might be in all of the various 'levels' of pressure-handling ability?

What about the Brownings? The Shilo Sharps?

NEF/H&R will tell you that the late model SB2 frame('99 & later) can be used with any 45-70 levergun load, and it is currently chambered in .500 S&W at 50kpsi if that tells you anything about the frame's safe pressure limits with large casehead calibers.

But be forewarned, recoil even within moderate levergun levels is brutal. I shoot the 300gr Nosler Partition at a little over 2400fps in mine and it's not fun from the bench without some weight in the stock and a premium recoil pad.
