NYS Pistol Permit Application
« on: February 22, 2006, 05:52:55 AM »
Hey Guys,

I just sent in my New York State pistol permit application. Any idea on how long the application process takes before I get my permit. They said 3 to 6 months but I was hoping to hear some personnal experience. Thanks in advance.

Mine took just about 4 months. That was in 1996. When I got my permit upgraded to a unrestricted carry permit in 2002 it took 2 weeks.

My concealed carry permit took about 5 months and around $100.  This was 13 years ago.  I think that the process is unchanged.  Good luck.

Hey JD,

Looks like we are waiting together! I just sent mine in a few weeks ago also, so I am wondering the same thing. I guess it depends somewhat on what county you are in. I am in Dutchess and I have talked to lots of other folks - all say 4-6 months, although one gun dealer said it might happen in three. My friend in Otsego County said he received his in one month! Good luck!!

when I got mine back in 86 it took 3 weeks. And at that time it cost 17 dollars.

I got mine back in 1982.

I was stationed down in Rome (Oneida County) NY and my home is in Russell (St Lawrence County) NY!

I got the application, filled it out and turned it in while I was home for a few days and in about 5 weeks or so I had the permit!

It probably helped out, with me having a Top Secret security clearance while I was in the Air Force!  Made for a "one-stop" trip for the background investigation!

Speaking of Pistol Permits!!!!

My wife and I just got our permits updated to the new "credit card" style this past Thursday!
One card for picture/permit and one card for ammendments!

Took about 20 minutes and we were on our way with the new permits in hand!
Cost was $13.00 each!

I got mine last summer too chuck. Much nicer and easier to keep looking nice.. Was an easy procedure I also got my nic card so I can buy firearms without the background check.  It is good for 5 years and free.

Thanks Guys for all the input. The investigator told me that it depends a lot on the references. They are sent a questionaire and it depends on how fass they turn that around. Some lose it and some just sit on it for a while. I handed in my app on wed. and my references got their questionaires on friday so hopefully they send it in ASAP. He also said that if the FBI is busy that could slow it up as well. Now I just have to decide what pistol is going to be my "first". I'm thinking a Taurus Ragin' Bull in the 480 Ruger 5".

From a few people I have talked to they said about the same 3-6 months. Hopefully your's goes though better than mine. I got mine in '99 and it took me about 11 months. When I called to ask about it I was told that it was because the FBI lost some of the finger prints and it was a while before they located them.

Taurus's seem to be a pretty good gun. My first one was a .357 mag 6" Ruger Blackhawk. I have since gain quite an array of handguns. Alot of times I prefer to hunt with them instead of a rifle or a shotgun.

3-6 months seems right about spot on...Of course every county differs. I submitted my paperwork to the Niagara County Pistol Permit Office in June of 2004 and I was approved in September of that same year.

I have had my permit since 1980, back then it took almost 3 months to get it.

I called the pistol permit clerk in Erie county last week. My dad passed away a couple weeks ago and I wanted to secure his handguns before some state or county agency picked up on it.

To be honest my permit hasn't had any activity on it since 1985. The clerk looked up my number and said it wasn't in the computer. She then found it in the old paper files. Then she informed me I had to renew my permit with a new backround check. She quoted me 6 weeks perform a Brady backround check. Then they would send me a letter. Then downtown I go for pictures and a new permit. Until this was done I couldn't add the handguns to my permit. Fortnately my brother has a Cattaraugus Co. permit. The whole ordeal took him about 15 minutes.

Now its just a waiting game. Then I can plan on what day I'll take off work so I can work around their 9:00AM to noon schedule. I just love Erie County.

str8shooter48, the NICS check is mandatory now. Once you get it done it's good for 5 years. I don't know why they want to give you a new permit though. I work with a guy that got his original permit back in the '70's and got a new permit a few years ago. His first permit was a carry permit. When he got his new one the judge restricted it to hunting and target shooting only! Be careful this doesn't happen to you. He went through h*ll getting the restrictions removed. Some counties/judges will try to give you a new permit so they can restrict them!

Yup str8shooter48...Glad I live in Niagara County...Seems so much easier to get things done with your permit on this side of the Canal.  I don't know what the problem is with Erie County.  I was told that my Brady update would not take long when the time comes.  Of course I will not need it then because any gun I purchase after that can be placed on my badge and not on my permit..

Unfortunately my permit is already restricted.  So that idea is out the window. I guess they want to update their records. I wasn't on their computer. They had to go to the paper files to find it. They'll probrably will question who the guy in the picture is on the original permit. He don't look much like the bald headed old guy trying to renew it.

str8shooter48, Erie County was restricting permits back in the '80's? In Onondaga County it was basically "shall issue", meaning that if you were approved for a permit they just gave you a carry permit...no questions asked. Then in the early '90's we had a judge named J. Kevin Mulroy (he was a republican too ) that took it upon himself to start restricting carry permit. To the point that it was almost impossible to get one. Then he got remove from the bench by the Appellate Court for misconduct (go figure) and now it's a lot easier to get a carry permit.

I just recieved my NICS Certification in the mail today.Next step is renewing my permit on their request because of the age of my permit and no activity since "85. I also requested an upgrade form to remove the Hunting and Target restrictions and make it an unrestricted carry permit.

Has anyone in Erie County gone through this? What did you use as a reason to request the carry permit? Did you get it?

The woman at the Pistol Permit office told me sometimes you have to see the judge for an interview and other times he just signs them if your approved. I'm hoping for the latter.

Why does Erie County have to be such a pain in the a$$?
Thanks.

Because it's Erie County...That's why...I don't think you need any more explanation than that. You just decided to live on the wrong side of the Canal.  Should have moved to Niagara County...The land of the easy to get carry permit.  As long as you have no criminal record it's a snap.

What do you do if you only know one person who already has a permit?
I know of just one person in my area that has a permit that is it!

Does a DOE or DOD security clearance help to obtain the permit?

I don't think it matters one way or the other. They're just looking for people to vouch for your character.

I can't answer this, I have no idea!

Adkhunter;
Your character referrences don't have to posess a pistol permit, it can be anyone except a relative!

I think a DOD security clearance helped me, at least the process took considerably less time!

Well I thought I'd give you guys an update on my permit status. I was on vacation getting married when it came in the mail. It took 2 months and 3 days for the whole process. Not too bad. I just have to add some pistols to it now.

Congrats on both counts!  The process seems to have sped up.  Now you have to get your new bride on board and enjoy shooting your new pistols.

Thanks. Yeah I got lucky with finding her. She has not only allowed me to buy guns but she has also boughten me a couple. She loves to shoot and hunt. I just wish i was a better "guide" and could get her a clean shot on a buck. She has shot a couple of pistols so far, 500 S&W (barely able to get her hands around the grip), 41 mag, 45 colt. I have a 40 S&W coming my way that she is going to love to shoot.
