Ruger M77RL .257 Roberts
« on: February 22, 2006, 09:18:42 AM »
I own a new Ruger M77RL ultralight in .257 Roberts.  Is this rifle capable of handling the Hornady Light Magnum .257 Roberts +P cartridge?

Yes, your Ruger Ultralight can easily handle any factory round, including the Hornady Light Magnums. As a side note, I personally have never been overly impressed with the accuracy, nor velocity of the Light Mags in any rifle I've fired them in.

Winchester used to produce a 257 Roberts +P load that was excellent. Check and see if they're still available and give them a try before trying the Hornady Light Mags.

BTW, I like Hornady bullets and ammo, I'm just not impressed at all with the overly hyped "Light Mags". Their standard ammo is in my opinion, better stuff. Most of time their claims of "higher velocity" don't live up to advertised velocities.

Absolutely.  I have the Ruger .257 Roberts 22" M77 and use WW +P brass loaded to +P pressures.  It is the same receiver Ruger uses to build rifles for cartridges that have much higher pressure limits, like the .25-06.

The Ruger action is one of the strongest out there.  It will easily handle the Hornady loads.  I, too have had less than stellar accuracy from MY rifles, but you may have better luck.
