Straightening a Mauser action
« on: February 22, 2006, 05:43:10 PM »
A friend has a 1909 Argentine action that looks to be twisted after the previous owner removed the original barrel. The bolt cannot be installed at all.

Is there anyone in the US that can straighten this action?

How is the action twisted? Is it twisted around the centerline or bent out of alignment front to back? I suppose theres not a  lot of real difference as neither can be readily repaired. There are likely folks out there who could do the repair but it's a bunch cheaper to simply buy a new receiver.

Repair is questionable. Probably will involve heating and tweaking several times , then magnafluxing to see if any cracks have developed , then reheatreating. Mausers are case hardened to a depth of .008 to .012 with a tough core. If the friend decides not to try repair I need to replace a guard assembly someone messed up before I got it and would be interested if he decides to sell it.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to straighten the action myself if I can get it for a fair price - nothing to lose at this point.
