Anyone have any experience with the cartridge? I like it a lot. No muzzle blast, barely has any recoil at all, and is deadly with deer.

I bought a 25 WSSM last year for deer season and it performed well for me. I took two shots and harvested a buck and a doe. First shot was the buck. Double lung shot @ 140 yards - buck jumped forward at impact, hit the groud, got up and ran for 50 yards before he went down for good. Small entrance wound with a quarter sized exit wound. Second shot was the doe. Neck shot @ 85 yards. Doe dropped in her tracks. Small entrance wound with a 4-5 inch exit wound. Bullet shattered the spine and blew out the other side.

wish Tikka would chamber a T3 for it...been wanting a .25 WSSM, but i'm not blown away by the browning or winchester rifles chambered for it.

i've heard differing stories about the blast; some say really quiet, others say its pretty loud? how does it compare with a .270?

The rifle that I purchased is a Winchester Coyote Light. It has a blued med/heavy fluted barrel and I put a Leopold VX-III 4.5-14x50mm with the 30mm tube on it.
I have never shot a 270. My other hunting rifles are a Browning 22-250 varmint, a 7mag Encore w/ heavy barrel, a 300 WBY Mark V, and a Ruger Deerfield 44mag. Recoil seems to be a little bit more than the 22-250 but well short of the 7 mag. It is a pleasure to shoot. My buddy who I hunt with says it sounds like a 30-30 when it goes off. Nothing like the Magnums that I used to shoot in the past.
One of my reasons for purchasing the rifle, other than having the two year itch without getting a new gun, was to get a rifle for my son and daughter to hunt with. My son, who is eight, has shot the rifle and does not fear it. My only problem now is that I don't know if I want to give it up.

I have a 25 WSSM in a Model 70 and have had similar results. I too had an unusually long shot out to 183 yards (for Virginia) across an open field. The deer never took a step. I was shooting a 100 gr. gameking.

This is a rifle I can count on for results. I really love this gun and will use it for the long shots.

I use the Model 70 Super Shadow and 120 NPs.

Rifle is light and recoils like a .270 shooting 110s. :grin:

Wish I could get one-inch groups, though. Am settling for 1.5 at present using imr4895 - max load. More load development necessary.

Have a VX1 3x9x40 on top.

I had the same problem. When I went to the heavier bullets the groups opened up. My best bullet for now will be the 100 gr Gameking. I also use the 4895 powder. Maybe if we try another powder, we will get different results.

How about it guys, any suggestions on another powder???

What type of Model 70 are you using?
Have you had it long?
My Super Shadow has a featherweight barrel...so...at the range I have to wait a long time for the barrel to cool after every two shots.

It is light to lug, tho'. :lol:

The same model gun. I also have this problem. It seems that after 3 or 4 shots you have to wait a while for the barrel to cool. I don't see that as a real problem, since it is a hunting gun and not a bench rest or silouette type gun.

Don't know why the barrel heats up so quick. The velocities are high, but not enough to generate this type of heat I would think. Oh well, the good does out number the bad though. :wink:

Still curious to know of other powders use with the 25 WSSM? I have tried the IMR 4895, but know there are other powders that should be good.

With the price of powder going up, it would be nice if any pards out there could pass on their expeiences with them.

So,
I am working on some loads using IMR-4831 and Sierra HPBTs. Happen to have 'em both. Use the 4831 in the .270 with excellent results.

1.5 inches is the best I can do in the Whiz'em even with the lighter bullet. Guess I'll need to another type of powder. (?)

Rifle shoots 120 NPs about 1.5"/100yards and 117 GKBTs at about 1.25+, just slightly better than the 120s using IMR-4895 in both loads.

BTW, the Winchester factory 120 grain load shoots the same.

Now, if the %$&@ing &^^$ rain and wind will stop for more than two days I'll get to go shoot!

I am getting th same results with the 120's and 117's also. I tried IMR4895 and IMR4350.

Now when I load and shoot the 100 gr bullets, I get amazing results. I have gotten sub 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I think this rifle loves the smaller bullets. At least that is what my test results are telling me.

I am getting ready to work up some 85 gr Nosler bullets. I think I will be very happy. :wink:

OK Larry,

Bought some 100 grain GKs today.

The 90 HPBTs grain are not shooting very well, either BTW.

Hope for better results with the IMR-4895 and the 100 GKs.

I'll let you know after the weekend.

Hey Harold,
Thanks for that new site. First I heard of it.

I loaded up some Nosler ballistic tip 85 gr bullets yesterday and will try to go to the range on Monday and test them. Will let you and the guys know how it goes :wink:

I had really good luck with the 117 gr Horn SST and W760 powder.

everything I tried with IMR 4895 just didn't cut the mustard.

this posting thing here is really confusing... anyway I was trying to edit the above to state that the top group has 4 clustered together with one bad shot by me and the middle group is just 4 shots.

I am excited. I took the Super Shadow back to the smith and had the mounts checked. All were OK. Checked the torque on the stock bolts. All OK.

Loaded one cartridge for each tenth of a grain from 44.1 to 44.9 grains inclusive and shot carefully, walking the 100 yards to mark each round/hole.

I used W760 and 120NPs. 44.5, 44.6, and 44.7 are nearly touching!
I realize that there may be a "luck factor" here but I now have a place to start.

After shooting a bunch of test loads in my 25 WSSM, AR config rifle.

IT likes W760 and almost any bullet I put with it. I think I found my powder!
