Was able to get to the range today with the 6.8 Rem G2 carbine (23" barrel). Chronographed some factory ammo. Started with Remington 115 gr OTM load and got only about 2500 fps this time as opposed to 2615 fps last time. The sun was hitting the chronograph at a low angle and I moved it into the shade but ran out of Remington ammo so could not verify if it was perhaps a lighting issue. It was chilly and quite windy today not sure of the actual temp or wind speed but guess it was about 45 - 50 degrees or so and 20 -25 mph wind. Chrono'ed the Hornady 110 gr VMax load and got an average of 2647 fps. It was late in the day and I only shot one group at 100 yds with this load and it went 1.8" for 3 shots. Two were very close and I could have pulled the third. Next I shot the Silver State 110 gr Pro Hunter load. It averaged 2630 fps. At 100yds I got a 3 shot 0.93 inch group and a different 5 shot group of 1.25". So I am a little disappointed that current factory ammo does not seem to approach the orginally advertised 2800 fps but I really am happy with the accuracy. I am going to shoot the Hornady for grouping at another session and I have another FMJ Silver State load to check too. This is going to be a great little hunting rifle and maybe someone will come out with a factory load again that really goes 2750 to 2800 fps, although the 2630+ loads will probably do anything I really need to do. I will try to rember to recheck some of these loads in the summer when its good and hot and see if the velocity goes up much.
